Show William Ransom schedules Poetry Reading A poetry reading by Pulitzer Prize nominee William Ransom will be held February 21 at Southern Utah State College. The reading will begin at 8 p.m. in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. "The public is cordially invited to listen to this excellent ex-cellent young poet. He read his poetry here two years ago and we're very happy to invite him back to SUSC a second time," David Lee, Chairman of the SUSC English Department, said. Ransom has also been invited to teach a Creative Writing Workshop this summer as part of the SUSC Summer School program. The concentrated workshop will deal primarily with poetry and will be taught June 12-23. The. Washington Poet's first book of poetry, "Finding "Fin-ding True North," was nominated for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. He is about to release a new book of poems, "Nomad," and a novel, "Run in Darkness Sleep in Light." Ransom's poetry and stories have appeared in numerous pulbications including in-cluding "New York Quar terly," "Prairie Schooner," and" "New Mexico Magazine," he also wrote a documentary film of the Artists-in-the-Schools Program titled Look: Listen." The visiting poet has conducted residencies in Washington, Minnesota, Coloado, Oregon, Idaho and Utah. He started the Fort Worden Writer's Symposium Sym-posium in 1973 and directed it until this year. He received a National Endowment En-dowment for the Arts creative writing fellowship in poetry for 1976-77 and participated as a judge in this year's "Penthouse Magazine" fiction contest. Ransom attended Washington State University and the University of P Jget Sound on athletic scholarships. scholar-ships. The brief period when he held the American record for the 880-yard dash was a highlight of his athletic career. He received his BA in Education from the University of Washington and has done further studies in American Minority Literature at the University of Nevada, Reno. |
