Show T-bird Grapplers close out Season at Flagstaff The Southern Utah State wrestling team closes out its regular season Saturday against Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. SUSC stands 3-10 on the season in dual meets. The Axers defeated the T-Birds, T-Birds, 23-15, earlier this season. In the previous encounter John Marshall (134), Dave Moat (158), and Phil Howa (190) all picked up victories for the Thunderbirds. A top rematch should take place at 177 where SUSC's Rene Van Dyke takes on Flint Swerdfenger. Swerd-fenger Swerd-fenger just got by Van Dyke 3-2 in Cedar City. Last week SUSC finished the busiest part of its schedule and maybe its toughest. The 'Birds won one and dropped two duals while placing ninth in the New Mexico Invitational. Western State (number 19 in NCAA II) bumped the T-Birds, T-Birds, 53-2. Howa got SU's only points as he drew with John Ramunno 8-8. Adams State (number two ranked in the NAIA) handed SUSC its 10th dual loss of the season 46-6. Van Dyke was the only winner as he got a fall over Greg Dixon in 7:50. The T-Birds only win came against New Mexico Highlands 27-24. Down 21-0, SUSC won five straight matches and held on for the victory. - Randy Jarvis (150), Moat, Chris Hardy (167), Van Dyke, and Howa were all winners. Moat and Howa were by pins. In Albuquerque the grapplers could score only three points. Van Dyke and Moat picked up SU's only victories. Van Dyke pinned Mike Delmonico of Mesa in 1 : 1 6 of his first match. Moat won 10-1 10-1 over Dan Janowski of Ft. Lewis in the first round of wrestle-backs. Next action for the T-Birds will be the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships to be held at Adams State, Saturday, February 25. |
