Show I BYJOEYSASSO I CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Why is CBS, a sad number I three in the TV ratings, sitting on 13 segments of a I potentially blockbusting show that seems just right for I our new romantic age? The series, 'Another Day,' was I originally scheduled to replace 'The Betty White Show' I on Monday but has been postponed indefinitely. I According to co-star David Groh, who's known to many I viewers as the ex-husband of 'Rhoda,' "CBS has been I frightened from the start because this show has quality I but they ought to understand we are their last ace in I the hole. Our audiences sometimes stand up and cheer I during taping and when we ask why, someone always I says, That's me up there, that's my family.' " The show I is about a young married couple with two children. That I sounds rather straight and normal but perhaps that's I what audiences want. Perhaps it could be a 'romantic' I reaction to shows such as ABC's 'Soap.' At any rate, I Groh's wife is played by Joan Hackett, an actress who's I received far more raves from her fellow thespians than I the general audience, which has seen her in such 'down' I films as 'The Last of Sheila.' Yet, since her peers think I highly of her and since Groh is pretty well known, it I sounds like a show that should make more than a few I waves for the audience. Unfortunately, there's a lot of I rumors going round about rampant hostility between I the two hostility that, some say, has escalated into I violence. For example, Groh is supposed to have bashed I Hackett with a 10-foot rehearsal table covered with food I and drink and cussed her out in the bargain. Groh denies I all this and says, "I have never even had words with I Joan. I think she's one of the best actresses in the I country, as funny as Chaplin. I'm just in awe of her. I She's such an unusual woman, as sensitive as a I precision instrument. Acting with her is like playing I tennis with Pancho Gonzales." And what does Miss I Hackett say to such compliments? "No comment." I TV BACKSTAGE: Anyone would be finer to give Dinah I Shore a big kiss than a mud-covered Sean Connery. The I actor surprised Dinah as she was taping a TV segment I about the making of Connery's latest film 'Meteor.' In I the midst of shooting, Connery ran off the film set, I grabbed the star of 'Dinah' and gave her a bear hug and I a kiss which seems to have annoyed her only I slightly . . . Henry Winkler and his live-in sweetheart I Stacey Weltzman want to get married. But there's one I thing he must accomplish first he's got to make sure I of a solid and growing love between himself and Stacey's I young son Jed, who is six. "Marriage isn't just two I peopfe in today's world. There's often a child of one of I them involved," Winkler told me. "It takes time..." The I idol of a million teenagers and the hero of 'Heroes,' a I movie doing spectacularly well at the box office, was I talking frankly about the status of things between himelf I and Stacey. Jed is the son of Stacey's first marriage I which ended in divorce three or four years ago. Henry I has never been married. "We never nad the problem I that he didn't like me or I didn't like him," Winkler said. I "Jed and I love each other. But kids take a long time I to assess adults. I don't want him to like me just because I I'm close to his mother. I want him to like me because I he chooses to. Stacey and I might have gotten married I already but it's still a little soon. Jed and I are getting I closer every day. I won't rush that for the sake of a I wedding." . . . Catherine Deneuve may say she prefers I perfumes and cars for the TV commercials but offscreen yshe prefers Hennessy V.S.O.P. , |
