Show Rollo- CSlypSiics I ByKHenRoUo j Would you believe that Monday, Feb. 13 was a holiday for state, county and city employees? Well, you'd better believe, because it was. State status still declares that Lincoln's Birthday is a legal holiday, as well as George Washington's. So if you have any question about Monday, Feb. 20, do not be dismayed for the city, county, state and federal off ices will all be closed on that date. Not that I want to slight Abe, but many years ago there was an agreement that there would be a single holiday to celebrate both birthdays to be known as the Presidents Holiday. That, according to our calendar, falls on Feb. 20. That one I can agree on. But two Monday holidays for state, county and city employees? It's too much. 4- I want to take this means of expressing my appreciation ap-preciation to a pair of the staff members here at the "Record." At the recently concluded Utah Press Association Convention a series of awards were presented. The Iron County Record captured a first place honor for the "best news story." The story was an interview in-terview conducted by and written by staff member Jay Wamsley with pictures by Jeff Ray. It dealt with Cedar City resident Mell Stewart's association with the late Howard Hughes. The two combined to present an interest and informative story dealing with one of the most controversial con-troversial personalities of the century. The honors go to them. A newspaper's responsibility respon-sibility is that of reporting! news. To win the "best news story" award is a coveted one. TIDBIT Americans are a funny lot. Take for example the physical fitness kick. A report recently crossed my desk stating that physical fitness was a growing interest in-terest among Americans. An interest that amounted to 12 billion dollars alone in 1977. The interest part, however, is the estimate, from the same report; that the average American spends only about 70 minutes a week on exercise. |
