George Pidd, the Salt Lake man who is under a life sentence for slugging and rob.bing a Tacoma taxicab driver on the night of December 20, while Pidd was serving as a private in B company Forty-fourth infantry, helped to plan and execute a sensational break of prisoners from the Pierce county jail here early this morning, but Tvas left behind in.his cell when his partners in the break were unable to smash the locks on bis cell door after the jailer had been slugged into unconsciousness. Tom French, sentenced for robbery; John! Johnson, accused of robbing a postoffice; Sam Suddoth, vagrant, and Arthur Grier, sentenced for robbery, were the prisoners who escaped, taking with them $700 iu money and jewelry from the jailer's strong box. Sixteen other prisoners wore offered their freedom by the men who escaped, es-caped, but refused to leave their cells. French and Pidd planned the escape. tsy a ruse rrencn gained., admission to the general corridor and attempted to release Pidd, .but failed. Pidd then called for Peter McC'abe, the jailer. "1 want to send a note to my wife," Pidd told the jailer, as -McCabe advanced, ad-vanced, inquiring as to the cause of the disturbance in the cell room. "It's a pretty time of night to be sending a note to your wife, ' ' the jailer answered as he n oared the cell. Then French slipped up behind McCabe Mc-Cabe and boat him over the head with a bottle contained in a sock until Mc-Gabe's Mc-Gabe's head was a mass of cuts and he, was rendered unconscious. French then obtained the jailer's keys and attempted attempt-ed to unlock the double set of lpcks which the military authorities had placed on the cell door.
