REGISTRATION URGED New Classes Now Being Formed for the Making of Surgical Dressings. Appreciating the 'intense interest shown by both teachers and pupils in the work ot the American Red Cross, the management of the local chapter desires to extend a special invitation to nil teachers now in the, city to visit the 'V' new headquarters. Every branch of the w-ork may be found in active operation six days of the week, from 10 until 5 o'clock, with the exception of Saturday, when the closing hour is 1 o'clock. The information bureau, with Jlrs. W. Mont Ferry in charge, gladly directs all visitors visit-ors as to the location of the various departments de-partments and the naturo of the work carried on. Hundreds of the teachers are remaining in the city lor business ;md pleasure pending the opening of their schools for another season of labor and the invitation is extended in the hope that many will avail themselves of the opportunity. Early registration of Red Cross workers work-ers who desire either regular or special training in the making of surgical dressings dress-ings is urged by officials of the local chapter. Many new classes arc now being formed for this, purpose, ami it is desirable that those wishing to take the courses begin at about the same time in order to facilitate progress in the work. There is no lack of competent instructors as there was early in the fall, the Salt Lake chapter now having among its members forty women who are certified instructors in surgical dressings. It is better that an instructor instruc-tor have a class of fifteen or twenty instead of ten, as the starting together makes it easier for all directly concerned. con-cerned. ' Direct to Beneficiary. Miss Kate Williams, executive l secretary sec-retary of the civilian relief department, explained yesterday that the allowances for the dependent wives of soldiers were transmitted directly to the benefi-ciarv benefi-ciarv by the war risk insurance bureau, it being one of the duties of the civilian relief committee to see that the wife was properly advised as to her rights and to assist her when needed in communicating com-municating with the government author- ities. "The government's idea," said Miss k, Williams, "is to deal generously with all dependent wives of soldiers, but it is not to foster the idea that just because be-cause , a husband has dono his patriotic duty aiid gone to' war the wife is to be relieved of all care and responsibility. If a wife is able to work and has no children, she is encouraged to do so, as the work takes her mind from brooding, brood-ing, and the lawful government allowance allow-ance comes to her just the same. The Red Cross extends its aid in all emergency emer-gency eases, such as sickness or death in the family, but never with the intent in-tent of making the recipients objects of charity." It was announced yesterday at local headquarters that the National League for Women's Service auxiliary would meet Tuesday afternoon in the main gauzo room for work on surgical dressings. dress-ings. January 7, Miss Gertrude Mc-Crath Mc-Crath will start her evening class in gauze work in the main gauze room. Postmaster Is Visitor. Frank J-. McLaughlin, postmaster at Park Uity, who was a caller at local neadnuarters yesterday, said that his city wns ready for an active part in Keil Cross work. Arrangements will be made either for a class of instructors to be sent to Park City to tca-h the women there, or for the women of that town to come to local headquarters and receive training here. Smith, chairman of the Red Cross department de-partment of the association, said yesterday yes-terday that the packing of the tenth large box had just been completed, with work already started on the eleventh box. In "the tenth box referred re-ferred to there were more than 1000 articles and thirty-five women were busy yesterday in the main work room. Frank W.
