Show SILVER'S POSITION. Among the divine rights likrdy to di-i-.appear uith the potb'llmn ciianges in the fcocuil and economic order of the world is the gold standard. Kor many years the pi ice of silver ha been reg-I reg-I ulated bv dihcrniitnat ions in favor of gold. Tnor-o i ho oi igiru Hy were rc--pon.ihte for the demouitizing of silver strove b. one of the most remarkable propagandas in history to make people beiove that gold, a:i a standard of monetary mon-etary value, was a divine institution. And I ho--: v, ho conducted the counter propaganda made the mistake ot pie-t pie-t u ring the ratio of sixteen to one as something too sabred for mankind to change without a revelation from heaven. But it must be said in favor or the hi metallists that They had tho facts of history on their side, and it is rather remarkable that in the last year production in this country clung close to t he sacred ratio. Wo can prepare ourselves to sec the young men, hump from the wars, overthrow over-throw nnny of tho idols we set up as sacred. They will scrutinize all of our so-called divine institutions and weigh them in tho balance. And when they are making revolutionary changes they will not hesitate, if they think it necessary, nec-essary, to set violent hands upon monetary mon-etary standards established by the grace of God and of a few men who believed that they and their successors could run the world moro easily with a gold standard stand-ard than with a bi-metallic standard. We can feel fairly certain that the entire question will be reopened and that the discriminations against silver will be removed. The relations of gold and silver and of ..-,o two metals with commodities have been artificial for many years as a result &t foolish legislation and the manipulation of world financiers. Whatever What-ever may bo the standard of value finally adopted, we may bo sure that the artificial relations will bo removed and that gold and silver will depend upon their natural value, if we may so term it, in the monetary system of the world. There may bo prieo fixing, but it will not be discriminatory as against either metal. The new generation which will release the people from bondage to tho special interests will see to it that absolute justice is established in the country's monetary system. There arc many reasons to believe that once silver is set free, so to speak, it will maintain a high price level as compared with gold and with other commodities. It is true that there has been much' hoarding of silver in the European countries, and that the release of theso stores ' will have a tendency to depreciate its value, but it must be kept in mind; that while the people have been hoarding silver the governments havo been hoarding gold and issuing paper money. All of the governments have found that they did not have enough silver money to take care of the necessities of the war. France reduced coinage one-hal'f and now is seeking to make up tho deficiency. Troops are being paid in silver; business everywhere demands more silver money; high prices of commodities com-modities in India call for more silver; China 's demand has increased enormously enor-mously and will continue to increase as China develops. Some of these are permanent influences. There are others which are merely temporary, as, for example, the decrease of output in Mexico Mex-ico and, perhaps, the rise in the prices of the chemicals with which silver is refined. "While tho world is altering so many things that have been muddled by old systems of government and economics, it will not hesitate to give new and exhaustive study to the monetary problem prob-lem and to make whatever changes are necessary. The friends of silver, knowing know-ing the black history of discriminations against the white metal, will feel confident con-fident that it will come through the ordeal occupying a higher position than ever. But its friends must be vigilant ana active. They must not permit it to be neglected . nor to be discriminated against by adverse legislation of cunning cun-ning financiers. |
