An official communication issued by the war office tonight says General Ailenby re6ports a further advance by a part of his line north of Jerusalem over a distance of a mile. PARIS. Jan. 4. Violent artillery fighting fight-ing on the Champagne and Verdun front is reported in today's official communication. communica-tion. A German attack in Upper Alaace was repulsed. Eight German airplanes and a captive balloon were brought to earth yesterday. The statement follows: During the night the Germans undertook several raids on small posts in the region of Juvi'ncourt, but obtained ob-tained no success. In the Champagne and on the right bank of the ileuse, east of hill 344 (Verdun front), there was violent artillery fighting for a time. In Upper Alsace a German attack at-tack near Aspach was repulsed completely. com-pletely. The Germans suffered appreciable ap-preciable losses and left prisoners and a machine gun in our hands. On January 3 French pilots brought .down two German airplanes and a captive balloon. Six other machines fell within the German lines after aerial combats. On the same day French squadrons bombarded the factories at Rombach and railway stations sta-tions at Metz-Sablons, Connans and Arnavilie. In .the course of these expeditions projectiles weighing 7500 kilograms were dropped. Germans Repulse British. BERLIN, via London, Jan. 4. Attacks by the British in the region east of Ypres and north of La Bassee canal were repulsed re-pulsed by German troops, who captured prisoners and machine guns In the righting, right-ing, army headquarters announced today.
