Show I I THE BENEFIT Miss Hitchcock Honored by a Crowded S House Never since the gifted and charming I Emma Abbott held forth at the Walker I i Opera House has that building been filled with such a crowd as was present at the I Ida Hitchcock benefit last evening Every seat in the lower circles was occupied I occu-pied and the audience was as great in enthusiasm I en-thusiasm as in numbers Following so i closely after ProfessorCareless mammoth concert some trepidation was felt before I hand as to tie success of the affair and the gentlemen who worked so tirelessly for its success are to be congratulated on the signal manner in which they achieved it The programmewhile not filled exactly ex-actly as advertised which is very seldom the case with such entertainmentswas an excellent one It opened with a very I well rendered quartette selection by i Messrs Krouse Van Praag Weihe and I Rohrdam who subsequently closed the I entertainment The second number I 1 num-ber was filled by Miss Ida hitchcock Hitch-cock with the recitation Damon I and Pythias This we believe is the first opportunity the general public has been given to hear Miss Hitchcock and her wonderful talents were fully appreciated appre-ciated by the audience Miss Hitchcock I carries herself with an easy grace and selfpossession that is wonderful in one of her years and her elocutionary talents I will sometime give her more than a local famo She achieved her greatest success suc-cess last evening in Jane Conquest Con-quest and was recalled a ntimbsr of times Miss Jennie Hawley who possesses pos-sesses a voice of great sweetness and no inconsiderable power also made her first appearance last evening The Patience sextette has been repeatedly given before the Salt Lake public and we think the rendition of last I evening was hardly as perfect as the same singers have given it Mr r Robert Gor linski and Mrs J Leviberg both filled numbers Mrs Levibergs voice seemed I to be slightly affected by a cold but her I encore selection was well rendered Professor Pro-fessor Weihes violin solos and Professor I Krouses piano selections made the pro gramme complete Prof Weihe as usual I was twice recalled Although we have not been given the figures a handsome sum must have been realized last evening and no one is more deserving than she to whom the benefit I I was tendered |
