Show "IN MY OPINION . . By Paul L. Pehrson AS YEARS go by and our lives become more complex ., . . as taxes and the cost of living give every normal Amer-can Amer-can a head ache ... as our burdens become greater, even to the breaking point seemingly ... as our "ism" friends would impose upon us a better way of life and put the whole world at unrest . . . Let us Thank God for such a day as Thanks- giving, and the grand season when our hearts are filled with gratitude for the many blessings that are ours. There arc many things that are wrong with our present situation, hut how grateful we should be for the many things " that are RIGHT. Anyone who has visited the Old World becomes a greater American on his return. Anyone who is an American should be appreciative of his birthright. The God-given right to think, act, speak and worship as he chooses. To be able to do these things without fear. The privilege of living in western America, America's Amer-ica's garden, where our mountains, our streams, our lakes and fertile valleys, our fine communities makes one stand with bowed head, thanking Him who created it. Getting nearer to home, you lucky people, living in this chosen land (and you did choose it) this great Salt Lake Val- Jey are fortunate beyond your power to appreciate, ah oi us who are fortunatie enough to live in Southeast Salt Lake are doubly blessed. And here is why I think so: Fine homes are here fine people live in them forward-looking forward-looking people with children who are well fed, well clothed and unafraid of the future children who are taught that the American home is the backbone of this great . nation children who are proud o their home, their parents and tihleir community. com-munity. Fine schools where our children are taught to think for themselves to make decisions, to hear all sides and choose for themselves, knowing they, themselves, are the masters of their fate. They know they can attain the highest office in. this grand old country of ours become the greatest doctor the finest chemist the most successful businessman . . .. regardless regard-less of his circumstances, whether rich or poor. I thank God for the teacher who inspires my children ; who teaches them that the greatest sermon is yet to be given, the sweetest song has never been sung, the strongest bridge has not been builded, the greatest harvest has not been reaped, the fastest plane has not been flown that America is as great as they are able to make it. That in them and their attitude lies the fate of a nation. Our's is a fine community where friendliness is taken for granted where you feci freedom and well-being in the very air you breathe. A. fine community where cooperation and fair play is the rule, pot the exception. Where, I ask you, in all the world are people so fortunate so secure, so kind, so generous and happy as in our blessed community Sugar House? i So, folks, in this Thanksgiving season, let's all count our blessings thank Him who makes it possible and above all, thank Him that we are on this side of the pond on the giving end, instead of the receiving end of a bread line. May it always al-ways be so. I |
