Bracken Lee of Utah have jointly issued a proclamation in which they have designated the period of July 22 to July 28 as National and Utah Farm Safety Week. It Should be pointed out to the people living in this part of bur great nation how many of our friends and neighbors have lost their lives, or become crippled and handicapped because of farm accidents. Most of Us will recall early this spring when a young man living near Roosevelt was killed when a tractor tipped over him. We see people about each day who have lost an arm, or a leg or have been seriously njured in on-the-farm accidents. During the year of 1955 seventeen lives were lost in Utah as a result of farm accidents and over $L,000,000 property prop-erty damage was experienced. Because farms of the State have become almost entirely mechanized, the hazard or accidents has been increased and greater safety precautions have become necessary. Advice comes from our governor, which should be taken seriously, in which he makes the following statements: "I request all persons and organizations interested in the welfare of farm people to join in the observance of this week for the purpose of eliminating, as far as possible, all acoidents on the farm and' in work associated therewith. "I also urge all farm families and those Who work oh farms to use extra precautions to the end that recognition of hazard's and prevention of accidents Will be adopted as a permanent part of everyday farm, operation." Farm organizations, county agents, our Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural College, and the Utah Safety council will jointly spearhead spear-head the week's program of activities, in which Utah will join the entire nation in observance of Farm Safety Week as proclaimed pro-claimed by President Eisenhower. By working together we can save lives, time and money. We can free people from grief and worry, and we can make all of our lives happier and more productive and profitable. A daily schedule of events throughout the week are planned, as follows: SUNDAY July 22, will be Church Day . . emphasizing the principle of reverence for life and the commandment, "Thou Shalt not kill." MONDAY Home Safety Day . . . stressing inspection 6f the farm home for hazards and maintaining good house- keeping habits. TUESDAY Livestock Safety Day . . . aiming at protection protec-tion of animal, yourself and your family with special care and knowhow. WEDNESDAY Fall Prevention Day . . . with emphasis on repairing and replacing and constant watchfulness to remove re-move hazards that lead to falls on the farm. THURSDAY Highway Safety Day . . . underlinging the importance of safe, legal driving in car or truck. And when moving heavy slow equipment on the highway, be sure it can be seen well in advance by using high flags, proper lighting and reflective tape on front and rear for dusk and night driving. FRIDAY .Machinery Safety Day . . . pointing up the use of machine guards and other protective equipment when the job calls for them. Stop a machine before attempting to oil, repair, adjust or unclog it. SATURDAY Review Day ... a day for thought about the whole picture of accident prevention on your farm. Think about the many particular ways in which safety pays. - 30 - |
