Show Very Special Arts Festival at VHS South Davis Very Special Arts Festival will open for one day only Friday, March 18. The festival, hosted by Viewmont High School at 120 W. 1000 N., is designed to celebrate the artistic abilities and possibilities of handicapped students stu-dents in the arts. Activities are planned from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Public is invited. "There will be workshops in visual art, music, folkdance and creative dance," according to Festival Fes-tival Coordinator Marsha Bradbury. Brad-bury. "All of these programs are conducted by professional artists giving students and their teachers an opportunity to experience the excitement of creation in the highest high-est positive situation possible." Working around the festival theme "Mardi Gras Magic" Ririe-Woodbury's Ririe-Woodbury's Lynn Walter Topovs-ki Topovs-ki will present a workshop in creative crea-tive movement. International folk-dance folk-dance specialist Linda Lundgren will be following up her recent two week residency in the schools with workshops in the art of folkdance. The music workshops will be under the direction of Leslie Timmons, an instructor from Utah State University, Uni-versity, who is certified in both Suzuki and Orff approaches to teaching music. In the visual arts workshops, the students will be doing mono-printing mono-printing under guidance of Blanche Wilson, a former instructor at the Ogden School for the Blind. An additional feature of the festivities festi-vities is integration of the festival participants. While the program is designed to accentuate the artistic opportunities for special education students and help develop their socialization and communication skills, great emphasis is also placed on their integration with their peers. Students in intellectually handicapped hand-icapped classes from Mueller Park Junior High, Centerville Junior High, Viewmont High School, Meadowbrook Elementary, and Valley View Elementary School will share the experiences with their counterpart from regular education edu-cation classes. Over 200 students are expected. Culmination of the day represents repre-sents two months of behind the t scenes work of many people. A core committee of teachers have volunteered their time in an effort to make the festival as meaningful for their students as possible. These teachers are Doris Krensky, Dianne Reel, Glaucia Brown, Cindy Cin-dy Anderson, Gayle Baker, Becci Illi, Gloria Daniels and Marsha Bradbury. Other volunteer support is being donated by parents and students from Meadowbrook Elementary and Viewmont High School. Very Special Arts Festivals are a program of Very Special Arts Utah, a non-profit organization promoting the abilities of special populations through the arts. South Davis Very Special Arts Festival is an approved special program of the Davis School District. Dis-trict. The festival is also being supported sup-ported and assisted by Very Special Spe-cial Arts, USA, an educational affiliate affi-liate of the John F. Kennedy Center Cen-ter for the Performing Arts and the Utah Arts Council. Local sponsors for the festival include Hardees and The Perfect Party of Colonial Square. |
