Hullinger Released After Seven Years Of Service; Vacancy On High Council Is Filled Members of the Roosevelt stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints, this week were functioning with a new stake presidency, as the result of a reorganization that took, place last Sunday. Presiding Pre-siding over the conference and effecting the changes in personnel were Elders Spencer W. Kimball and Clifford E. Young, representing the general authorities. Sustained by a thousand members of the stake at the opening Sunday session as the new president was Ezra John Nixon, who has .served the past two years as second sec-ond counselor to Hollic G. Hullinger, Hul-linger, whom he replaces as president. presi-dent. Chosen by Pres. Nixon as first counselor was Paul Murphy, member mem-ber of the high council; with Elmo Dwain Buchanan, counselor in the Third ward bishopric, as second counselor. Retained as stake clerk was Joseph E. (Ted) Olpin. Served Seven Years The retiring stake president, Mr. Hullinger, was sustained to preside over the Roosevelt stake in August, 1949, when Pres. Ray E. Dillman was released to become president of the Western States mission. At the time of his call to the stake post, Mr. Hullinger was serving as bishop of the Roosevelt ward- Released as first counselor was Clifford E. Drol-linger Drol-linger and Mr. Nixon as second counselor. Other counselors who had served with Mr. Hullinger over the seven years were W. Russel Todd, Dr. R. Vernon Larson and Howard M. Ivory. Dr. Larson was released to become bishop of the Roosevelt ward in 1951; Mr. Todd was given his release in 1954 after serving with two presidents and is now president of the Randlett Indian branch, and Mr. Ivory moved to Springville. New High Councilman Calling Mr. Murphy into the stake presidency left a vacancy in the high council of the stake, and Clifton N. Memmott, currently serving as counselor in the Roosevelt Roose-velt ward bishopric, was sustained to fill this vacancy- The newly sustained stake president, pres-ident, Mr. Nixon, is a native of Huntington where he was born April 8, 1904, a son of James W. and Effit Dean Wooley Nixon. He moved with his family to Provo in 1916, where he attended high school and 1 year at the BYU. (Continued on Back Page) STAKE REORGANIZATION... After his return he entered the University of Utah and was graduated in 1929. On Sept. 5, 1928 he was married in the Salt Lake Temple to LaRue Olson. They have three children, Jack, Dorothy Dean, who are both attending the BYU, and Karen Colette, elementary school student in Roosevelt. Came Here In 1914 Following his graduation from college, Mr. Nixon joined the J. C. Penney Co., and after spending 14 years in Colorado, he was transferred to Roosevelt as manager man-ager in 1944. Since coming here he has served in various civic capacities. ca-pacities. Was president of the Lions Club;' city councilman; secretary sec-retary of Indian Days committee and member of Chamber of Com-; merce.. In October, 1954 he retired from the Penney company and is associated as a partner in the Bowman Bow-man Machinery Co., a farm equipment equip-ment dealership. His church service has included counselor and president of the YMMIA, counselor and later bishop bish-op of the Roosevelt ward, and after af-ter the division of the ward, he was called to preside as bishop over the Second ward. When the four wards were created in March 1954, Mr. Nixon was released as bishop and called to be second counselor in the stake presidency. Active Scouter There are few men at the age of 43 who have contributed more to the development of scouting than has the new - first counselor in the stake presidency, Paul Murphy. Mur-phy. He was born in Woodland. Feb. 23, 1913, a son of Edwin L. and Livina Moon Murphy. His family moved to Upalco in 1917, where he attended elementary school, and was graduated from Roosevelt High School where he was active in student affairs and athletics. Graduated from BYU in 1937 with a. B.S. degree in economics. eco-nomics. Mr. Murphy is assistant manager of the Commercial Bank of Utah, and is now serving his third year as mayor of Roosevelt City. He previously was a councilman for four vears He is active in civic affairs, being a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the UBIC committee. His scouting activities date back to 1933 when he first became interested in-terested in this phase of youth development Me has served as scoutmaster and in about every other position in the great program.. pro-gram.. Two years ago he was honored hon-ored at the annual National Parks Council Fellowship dinner by being be-ing presented the Silver Beaver award. He is currently a vice-president vice-president in the National Parks Council. . On May 24, 1939 Mr. Murphy was married to Blanche Lublin in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three children, Carol Ann, Paula and John Paul. His church activities has included in-cluded work in the Aaronic priesthood priest-hood as an advisor; Sunday School teacher; ward' teacher;, secretary of the 162nd quorum of Seventy; stake clerk and high councilman. Born In Venice Mr. Buchanan was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Venice, Utah, son of C. LeRoy and Laura Mae Cowley' Buchanan. He graduated from Richfield High, attended the BYU and served in the Netherlands mission mis-sion from Nov. 1936 to March 1939. On May 23, 1941, he was married mar-ried to Ann F. Herbert of Salina in the Manti Temple. He is a veteran vet-eran of World War II, having served in the Navy- They are parents of two children, Jack and Jill (twins). , Since 1947 Mr. Buchanan has been affiliated with Christensen's Department stores, and was transferred' trans-ferred' to Roosevelt in 1950 to become manager of the local unit. He is currently serving as a member mem-ber of the city council and has been active in civic affairs. Two weeks ago he was elected presi-' dent of the Lions Club, and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. Prior to coming to Roosevelt, the new second counselor was a member of the Salina Second ward bishopric. He has served as a counselor on the stake Sunday School superintendency; regional dance director with his wife; and since March 1954 has been counselor coun-selor in the Third ward bishopric. Several other appointments were announced during the afternoon after-noon session of the conference. Venil Johnson was called' as a member of the presidency of the 162nd Quorum of Seventy, and Devere Hancock as second counselor coun-selor in the stake mission. |
