Show post ( BASIN POST NO. 64 (Continued From Last Week) One month ago, in Paris, France, one of our Utah American Amer-ican Legion - members, Hal R. Harmon, Utah chairman of Crusade for Freedom, and 76 other Americans, privileged to make the trip in . behalf of their organization and for the outstanding work they had done for the Crusade for Free-doom, Free-doom, stood and heard General Alfred M. Gruenther, Supreme Commander, Allied Powers in Europe, give a 2 hour briefing. General Gruenther's tribute to Radio Free Europe and the part it plays in helping us win the cold war and forestalling a hot war, was very significant to the 76 who who heard him, because they , had just cotme from Munich and Berlin, where they had inspected the" actual facilities of Radio Free Europe, its main broadcasting stations, transmitters, monitoring stations sta-tions and Freedom Balloon launching site near the Czech border. They travelled to' Europe upon up-on the invitation of Henry Ford II. national chairman of the Crusade for Freedom, to find the answer to two basic questions: 1. Is Radio Free Euroipe really real-ly effective? 2. Should it continue as a private operation, financed by the contributions of American citizens to annual Crusade for Freedom campaigns, or should its Operation be undertaken and paid for by the government? govern-ment? Based on the abundant evidence evi-dence and testimony which they carefully considered and on the spot inspection and observation ob-servation they were convinced that.R.F.E. IS effective, IS hitting hit-ting its targets behind the Iron Curtain, IS worth every dime and1 dollar that millions of Americans have cbritribuitexi to make it a reality. In answer to question number num-ber 2, they all realized at the end of their tour that one of the chief reasons for the power and effectiveness of Radio Free Euroipe is the fact that it is independent o f government control, that its broadcasts are hard Witting, unhampered by diplomatic considerations', and more beliieveable as a source of truthful information because listeners know its not government govern-ment propaganda. So their conclusion con-clusion was that it should remain re-main as it 'is, a voice from the people, to preserve the strength of a one and one-sixth million watt radio' network that President Presi-dent Eisenhower termed "one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal of democracy.
