Show Early Roosevelt Settler Back To Visit Friends Way back shortly after the turn of the century, a man by the name of "Charley" ShurtleCf and his wife and children came into the Uintah Basin to establish estab-lish their home and help in its pioneering. Charley, who is now 83 years young, and lives in San Diego, California, pitched a big tent on the corner where the Shurtleff Hotel now stands, and opened the first hotel and cafe to accomodate the passers-through passers-through and those who desired food and lodging. All this happened in 1905, and after having gotten a start in the hotel business Charley built a building and went into the hotel and cafe business in earnest. Actually, what brought the pleasant Charley Shurtleff to Roosevelt was a survev gang headed by Ed. F. Harmston. Visiting here with their father fath-er were Rowland, of San Diego, and Devoux. of Palm Springs, California. It is the first time in 32 years the three of them have been back here together. Mrs. Shurtleff died in 1939 and Charley lives in California with his two bachelor sons. They left the Basin in 1919. |
