(In about six weeks cities and towns of Utah will hold eciions to select a slate of officers who will assist in ad--iiistrating the affairs of the municipality or incorporated n through the next two and four years. Recently, the Utah State Legislature changed the law " a municipal elections and the tenure of the elective of-cers. of-cers. Previously only one councilman or town board mem-'jr mem-'jr was elected for a 4-year term. . . . The new law makes j councilmen, the mayor, recorder and treasurer's of-;;es of-;;es (our-year terms. Every two years part of the slate is ejected. . j Two years ago . incorporated towns and cities in Du-, Du-, jane county selected a mayor, two councilmen and a re-j re-j order for 4-year terms, and two councilmen and a treas-L-erfor 2 years. This procedure was in keeping with the i -ew law, which so reads that those offices which were filled hr two years will be vacated in 1952 and must be filled at '; city election on November 6, 1951 for 4-year terms. I Thus, on November 6, Roosevelt, Duchesne, Myton and ijiiona will select three councilmen and a city treasurer i assist those elected two years ago to guide the affairs j the towns for the succeeding two' years. The new law specifies that primary nomination conven- :w must be held between Oct. 8 and 22. Tickets must be r. . .'fed with the city recorder on or before October 22, and j jot before Oct. 8. Two registration dates, Oct. 9 and 30, . ! have been designated by the law for the convenience of : lose who are not now on the voting rolls. All this information brings us to the important thing ) : in the forthcoming election. . . . Citizens should become concerned and excited about who will be their councilmen ; ai treasurer for the next four years. . . . They shouldn't $ Jo as Americans are prone to do sit idly by with the : do-nothing" attitude until the day after election, then rare ; i? in indignation over the "poor representation" we now ' save as our city officials. if v E v ' CITHOLIC POPE DECRIES ; WOULD FLOW OF SEX BOOKS Was very much impressed recently in a newspaper ; ) j;-vrorff "message Pope VIus had sent To all members'" tflie Roman Catholic church from the Vatican City in concerning the flow of "sex" books that is flooding ' -e nations of the world. J In talking - with 100 French priests, the Pope made j tvery clear that Catholic fathers of families throughout ;i ie world must unite to combat "this plague." He specified f J -.at he was particularly attacking Roman Catholic authors sf the "trash literature." J In his discourse on this subject the Pope made sev- sal pertinent statements, part of which is being reprinted, J ! follows: i j "We speak of writings, books and articles touching sex- al initiation, which today often achieve enormous sales success and flood the entire world, invading childhood, . submerging the rising generation, troubling those engaged to be married, and young married couples. "One is flabbergasted at the intolerable effrontery of J, such literature," the Pope went on. "When even paganism ; itself seemed to halt in respect before the secret of mar-, mar-, ned intimacy, we must suffer its mystery to be violated ; and fully exposed to view. ; "Indeed one wonders whether there still exists a prop- , fly marked boundary between this initiation, and the erotic i and obscene publications and pictures which deliberately , Kt out to spread corruption or to exploit shamefully, for j profit, the lowest instincts of debased nature." It is gratifying to know that a leader who directs the J irs of a world-wide organization with such magnitude as the Catholic church has taken such a stand. Other church leaders have fought this "evil" over j 'he years. . . . Now, if all religious groups and other civic 'i service organizations would join in this crusade, along with parents of children who are guilty of permitting the i asn" to be circulated, then those whose moral concepts I are of the standard that they will write and publish such ' 1 ' propaganda, will be forced to cease their activi- 3 ; esi and perhaps the "plague" will end.
