Show National News Summary Cosi-Of-Living The index of the Bureau of Labor La-bor Statistics for mid-November disclosed a continued decline in living costs from mid-October. The index was down eight-tenths of one per cent from a month earlier, most of which was due to a drop in food prices for the fourth consecutive month. For mid-November, the index was 172.2 per cent of the 1935-39 average av-erage of 100. At this level, living liv-ing costs were 4.4 per cent above a year ago, 29.2 per cent above June. 1946, when wartime price controls were abandoned, and 74.6 per cent above August, 1939, when World War II began. Iron Ore The U. S. Bureau of Mines has estimated that there are 500,000,-000 500,000,-000 tons of iron ore in Iron county, Utah, much of which is good enough for use in western steel production. Its estimate is based upon wartime surveys of about half of the major iron-bearing iron-bearing areas of the county. The district has produced 10,139,500 tons of ore since large-scale operations op-erations started in 1923. Occupation Costs The overall costs of occupying Japan dropped from $829,000-000 $829,000-000 in fiscal year 1946 to $713,-500,000 $713,-500,000 in fiscal 1948, but the cost of government and relief more than tripled in the 6ame period. In 1946, government relief re-lief in the occupied area cost $111,000,000 while in fiscal 1948 costs jumped to $374,400,000. Costs for this year are not yet available. Fertilizers Agricultural experts are advising ad-vising the farmers of the nation who plan to purchase fertilizers for the spring crops to buy early, for two important reasons; (1) the chances of getting the fertilizer fer-tilizer are better and, (2) it will be in better condition. Fertilizers should be stored on a wooden floor, under a tight roof, with protection from driving rain. It should not be stored more than 6 to 8 bags high as greater pressure pres-sure may cause caking in the lower bags. Students Full-time enrollments in 726 colleges and universities of the country on November 1 were only nine-tenths of one per cent greater than one year ago. There were 1,580,783 students enrolled on a full-time basis in the 726 institutions in-stitutions and 351,196 enrolled for part-lime work. War veterans vet-erans make up 40 per cent of the enrollment. |
