Show Local Boxers Try For National A. A. U. Meet Seven local amateur boxers will leave early Friday morning for Salt Lake City to exhibit their wares at Derks field on Friday evening. The Basin athletes ath-letes under the management of Buzz Larsen will enter the Salt Lake ring to raise funds for a chance to compete in the Na-' tional A. A .U. boxing meet to be staged in Portland, Oregon, August 21, 22 and 23. Making the Salt Lake jaunt are: Max Horrocks, 175 pounds who won the amateur heavyweight heavy-weight title at the Salt Lake A. A. U. tournament last spring; Garth Gardner, 155 pounds; Lor-en Lor-en Lloyd, 150 pounds, another winner in the recent Salt Lake bouts: Merlin Sprouse, 118 pounds, who punched his way to the novice title last spring; Ron Edrington. 118 pounds; Orvil Allred, 125 pounds and Floyd Cox, a new comer to the Basin's simon pure ranks who will weigh in at 105 pounds. Aside from raising traveling funds the Friday's Salt Lake matches will decide which Utah fighters will move into Portland on August 21. Two boxers from each weight and bracket will be chosen to fight in the National A. A. U. after the final bell Friday Fri-day night. "There will be some good boys from the Uintah Basin crawl through the ropes at Derks field," declared Mr. Larson. "There will be some stiff competition, com-petition, but we should take several sev-eral of the events." |
