Show Davis Lives And Dies Underpressure It's been the streak shooting of Casey Lloyd that has bailed Davis out of man, close encounter this year. Bv KEITH DUNCAN . Journal Sports KAYSVILLE -- "Casey Lloyd is what we call in basketball a 'streak shooter'," said Mike Gardner. "HE'LL HIT five or six in a row. then miss a few, then come right back and get seven in a row," continued Gardner. Perhaps the finest example of a Lloyd exhibition ex-hibition was the Woods Cross outing on Jan. 24 when Lloyd was having some trouble playing aggressive defense and Gardner had to yank him out for a minute to talk it over. "All he did was to go back in and proceed to can seven straight jump shots. That's the kind of player he is, pure shooter. "IT'S BEEN a while since I've seen a kid have the kind of rotation on the ball that Casey has and he also has excellent range. When he's on balance and shoots square to the basket, he's just excellent. "I'd have to say that Lloyd is our purest shooter, where (Ryan) Smith is a scorer and (Steve) Sargent is a scorer. If you took pictures of everyone's shots, Lloyd has the best form," said Gardner. BUT GARDNER not only enjoys Lloyd's offensive magic, but eats up his aggressive style on defense. After Lloyd had entered back into the Woods Cross game, he not only canned can-ned some long outside shots but he started to play some defense too. Against Viewmont last week, Lloyd made seven steals and much of the game wa, ed to a forward spot and had t0 guJ' that were six or seven inches taller "Next year Casey will be a great all-player all-player for us." said Gardner. ' AND ANOTHER positive about L!o; love to play under pressure. Certainl he's had his chance to play in enough, situations. Last Tuesday night in Kaysville. he teammates had another pressure pxy against the same team. Woods Cross i gotten hot in before. If Davis could r game, they would qualify for the thirj position in Region Fourand earn a ticke 1984 State Playoffs. "CASEY DOES perform well under J ure. He's started in every ballgame an : important to our success as any ph'-' have. It's not a one man show here.anji i has proved he can blend in with tk ' kids," said Gardner. ; If the Darts were to lose to Woods C: ' would force at least a two-team playoff Viewmont were to lose too, it would f ! three-team playoff. "What we wanted ' was to beat Woods Cross and get it oir ' But if we fall, they'll have to beat use.;; get to stale." said the coach. Most ;; -there were two teams tied for that lastsp.-p Davis and Woods Cross would play on F-.' If there were three teams deadlocked."1' might be Thursday and Saturday Ik ' play. |
