Show Yike5 Win Some, Lose Some Sargent shoots Darts past Vikes second time this year. 1 v '' By DAVE WIGHAM : Clipper Sports : V 1 1. W MONT-- Steve Sargent will graduate i this spring from Davis High and no one will be i h;ippicr than Viewmont coach Ron Johansen. j A couple of weeks ago Sargent sank two foul i .liotsuith two seconds left in the game to give i ilic I Jai ls a one point victory over the Vikings i ;iml then last Friday Steve sank a 23 footjump- ! shot with four seconds left to once again knock ; off the Vikings. THIS WAS a blowout by Davis standards : though as th.-y won by a whopping two point margin 54-5;. "Another blowout" laughed ; Davis coach Mike Gardner in the lockers after : this biu win. The' win pulled the Darts up even with the Vikiniis in the region standings as both sides now sit at 4-5 in league play. East leads the region, and has won the title, with a 8-1 mark : followed bv Highland at 6-3 then comes the i Vikes and Darts. Woods Cross still has a shot : at 3-6 while Bountiful is out of state considera-: considera-: tion with a 2-7 mark. Only one region battle remains. ! THIS BATTLE was a while knuckler : throughout the second half as the two clubs ': traded buckets and the lead. The score would : have been lied at the end of the third period but Sargent, yup folks him again, hit from the park-; park-; inn lot to give the Darts a slii,. 41-39 advantage. ! Boih sides actually had the chance to put this game in the win column in the final two mi- nutes. With just over a minute to play Bret : Howard hit a pair of foul shots to give the : Vikes a 51-50 lead but junior Casey Lloyd : wasted no time hitting a jumper to give the : Darts a 52-51 lead with just under a minute j remaining. : VIEWMONT then turned the ball over and : : were forced to foul Ryan Smith but Ryan mis-: mis-: ; sed the front end of a one and one and the Vikes : :. had the ball back. In their haste to score though ': ': the Vikes threw the ball out of bounds and once M ismnmeSt tasSM&K&s. mmismMm& - mmiS3stb.s clipper shaun stahle In the first of two games last week, Viewmont played Woods Cross nip-and-tuck for the first half before applying the clamps in the third quarter and going on to win. ; ; again they fouled, this time it was Jett Sampson i i at the line. His first shot was long and on the rebound i i Casey Lloyd was whistled for a foul sending i senior Trov Hanks to the line with 16 seconds : j showing on the clock. Troy sank the first one : '; knotting the score at 52-52 and when he missed i i the second attempt most fans believed over- lime was forthcoming. : ' HOWEVER with ten seconds left the Darts called timeout and set up the big play. "We knew it was coming" admitted Viking assistant coach Rod Green "and we made them take the shot we wanted them to take. But it went in." Indeed. Sargent took the ball and dribbled to the right side where Sampson set a big screen, and then lofted the winner. Viewmont tried to eet up court in a hurry, they had no timeouts left, but the desperation shot from midcourt never had a chance. Junior Shane Thacker led the Vikings in scoring with a 19 point effort with Bret Howard Ho-ward adding 13. Davis saw both Sargent and Smith pourln 17 with Casey Lloyd adding 12. Sargent got all but one of his points from the Held while Smith picked up nine of his points from the charity stripe. THESE TWO clubs are about as evenly matched as two teams could be and it'sjust one of those cases that one team has to lose, unfor-tunatelv unfor-tunatelv for Viking faithfuls they lost both times. |
