Show commentary dave wigham Davis ' "Unofficial" Wrestling Squad By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports OGDEN - Sitting in the Dee Events Center at Weber Stale and watching all the local wrestlers battle the state's best 1 decided to come up with the Clipper's official unofficial all-county wrestling club. I KNOW that people will disagree w ith some of the selections made but the first team w as selected on the basis of their show ing in the state competition while the second team took into consideration the entire season. This club could battle just about anyone else who came up with a county side. Here then is one reporter's opinion on the Davis County all-county team. 98 POUNDS: Senior Wayne Estep of Clearfield Clear-field closed out a brilliant high school career with a third place showing in the state event. Wayne also won his region crown a couple of weeks ago. 105 Pounds: Davis gets their first wrestler on the team here with Derick Green getting the nod following his fifth place showing at the state meet. 1 12 POUNDS: No question here with Shawn Robinson of Davis getting the choice. Shawn placed second at state following his third straight region title. This was the toughest weight in the state and two of the top four were from this county. 1 19 Pounds: One of the two state champions from this county has this spot with Rodney Rientjes of Layton finishing out a great high school career with the state crown. Rod was third in state a year ago but moved up to the top honor this past week. Rod also won the region title. 126 POUNDS: This weight was different to select. Since no one from the county placed at state we chose Jeff Sowell of Viewmont as our man. Jeff would have placed in the state, he could have gone for the title, but a shoulder injury suffered at region prevented him from wrestling at state. Jeff had numerous awards to his credit this past year and he's my selection. 132 Pounds: Sophomore Todd Kopecky of Clearfield is a surprise pick to some people but he placed fourth at state to earn the spot. The younger brother of a two time state champion Todd just might be tough to beat the next tw o years himself. 138 POUNDS: Layton gets another pick here with Brent Higgs getting the selection. Brent won a region title a couple of weeks ago and followed that w ith a fourth place showing at state. 145 Pounds: Shon Wilson of Viewmont gets the nod with a region title and a second place showing at state to his credit. Shon won a state title as a junior so he realized his dream at least once in his great career. 155 POUNDS: A year ago Nate Hinckley of Davis took second at state but this time the likeable senior won the title with a convincing win in last Saturday's finals. Nate also won several region titles in his great three year career at Davis. 167 Pounds: Mike Sorenson becomes the fourth Falcon to be named to my team after his fourth place effort at state and his region title at one of the toughest weights in the state. 185 POUNDS: Big Greg McNabb of Davis is my pick here as he placed fourth at state following fol-lowing winning a region crown the previous week. Greg was involved in a great battle in the semifinals a battle some felt he won. Unlimited: Woods Cross gets into the act w ith Joe Gillespie taking this spot. Joe came on strong to claim third at state after winning the region tittle. SO THERE you have my first team selections. selec-tions. As it turned out fourgrapplers w ere from Clearfield with three from Davis, two each from Viewmont and Layton and one from Woods Cross. Just for the record here are my second team picks. 98: CARY Gunther of Woods Cross. 185. Dusty McMullin of Clearfield: 112. Eric Hyde of Layton: 1 19. Adam Howard of Viewmont: 126. Rick Herdt of Clearfield: 132. Mike Ger-rard Ger-rard of Davis: 138. Kyle Foster of Viewmont: 145. Tom Wood of Clearfield: 155. Kirk Shepherd of Bountiful: 167. Mike Erickson of Woods Cross: 185, Mark Zesiger of Viewmont: View-mont: Unl., Rody Meacham of Davis. |
