Show Houskeeper and Seljaas Play In BCI is le I By DAVE WIGHAM s Clipper Sports I BOUNTIFUL - It isn't often that basket- ie ball players from this area are invited to out-of- ls state tournaments but last week a pair of play ers from Davis County were involved in a national na-tional event held in Phoenix, Ariz. )s GARY SELJAAS of Bountiful and Greg y Houskeeper of Woods Cross were both mem bers of the Utah side that participated in the national BCI Seniors tournament. This tourna-ment tourna-ment is for high school seniors only with the I majority of them having played in the regular BCI event held last summer. ' In the summer tournament any player under Ua certain age could play but this one was for seniors in high school only. Several teams were affected by this rule according to Gary. "During the summer some of the good teams had juniors playing and they weren't able to play in this tournament so it really did make a difference. Plus there was another tournament going on somewhere in California that several clubs went to instead of this one. If I had to choose the toughest of the two I would have to say that the competition was tougher in the ear- summer event." IN ANY EVENT both local players thought yeal this tournament was a fun one. Houskeeper , Bt even had a different experience, "There were eaga Quite a tew guys bigger than me. It never really j ik bothered me but it was different. I felt as nee ii though I held my own against them. It took me a little while to adjust but then I played well," y he added. 5 jj On the first night they were at the tourna- hanji ment, the Utah side played an exhibition game foot against the L.A. Junior Lakers and the Utah a side won 86-60. In that battle Seljaas managed shav: to score 13 while Hous added 8 plus did a good t"al1 job on the boards. THE NEXT night they played their first official offi-cial game in he tournament and they knocked off the team from Phoenix by the score of 76-65. 76-65. Seljaas once again had a good night getting 15 points while Hous drew a lot of defensive attention and finished the game with 7 points. Next up the L.A. Watts team which defeated the Utah squad 86-82. Houskeeper managed 8 points in this game but Seljaas failed to score, "for some reason I didn't get to play that much me in this game," he noted. The the final night Utah came back strong to claim third place in the event with a 126-79 whipping over the host ! Arizona team. Those 126 points set a scoring PC. record for the tournament as both Hous and j Seljaas scored 13 points. , 3 THERE WERE plenty of college scouts at the tournament the first couple of nights but neither player or coach could talk to one another according to the rules of the event. As for their respective futures in basketball both A indicated they had open minds. J 1 "I go over to visit Wyoming this week and then down to Dixie the following week" admit- r ted Houskeeper. "I'm not sure where I'll go t and play, maybe a junior college so I can get playing time." ' SELJAAS is about the same, "Snow and Dixie have indicated interest in me and I'll visit both schools in the near future. Nevada-Reno has also shown some interest. It's a wait and see situation right now" he offered. |
