Show W Bt-B(BMMtMwIl By ALICE MITCHELL It has often been observed by historians that the history of mankind has been one of following fol-lowing the streams and lakes in an endeavor to find water. When the water was all used, the tribes would move to other cities for the precious liquid. The trails of the early fur traders trad-ers and early western adventurers adven-turers always followed the rivers riv-ers and streams. Often they even used boats larger than canoes to sail to their destinations. destina-tions. Fur trading posts were begun along the water ways. When the pioneers and pil- grims settled in the United States, they too settled near sources of water. They learned the process of irrigating through ditches, the water of which was divided among the people of a certain district. Precious as it was, water often brought about fights as one farmer far-mer took the turn of another. In the early days of West Bountiful area was noted for its streams and ponds. People in Salt Lake City sent their animals out to the Bountiful area to water. As settlers came to the area they noted the ground and underground water streams. They drilled wells for household house-hold use. Knowing that there was much surface and subsurface sub-surface water they did not build basements in their dwellings. dwell-ings. They built them above ground level and built several stories in their homes. If there was only one story, it was built above ground level. At this time of the year, the modern settlers are finding that the pioneers were wise in their building. They are finding that much of the building of today was unwise. During the past weeks many people in West Bountiful have found their basements covered with several inches of water. They have had to roll up rugs, to pile furniture up stairs and in safe places. They have used their sump pumps day and night. They have also vacuumed gallons and gallons of water. There may come a time in West Bountiful when it will be illegal to build homes with basements.
