Show Fire Prevention Week Slated October 9 to 15 Last year fire cost the American Ameri-can people 11,000 lives. $781 million mil-lion in direct property loss, and untold personal suffering and hardship and economic loss. Utah had its full share of those fires and of that loss and suffering. It is well each year that public attention be centered on the needless need-less loss of life and property from fire in the annual observance of Fire Prevention Week. This year the week will be observed from Sunday, Oct. 9, to Saturday, Oct. 15.' Officials, organizations, individuals indiv-iduals and all mdiums of public information are asked to cooperate in bringing the fire safety message to- the American people. The Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Review is glad to do its part in fire safety by urging the public to consider the importance of fire prevention next week, and to take those steps as officials, as owners of property, and as individuals indivi-duals which will reduce thhe toll of fire. Careful inpection of a home, a business, a farm or a school may reveal some of those conditions which often cause fires such things as faulty wiring, defective flues and chimneys, combustibles near furnaces and heaters. Emphasis Em-phasis on the proven danger of carelessness in burning trash or brush, of children playing with matches, of careless diposal of cigarettes cig-arettes and matches, will help to avoid the many fires resulting from such causes. Of particular importance to rural rur-al areas is the fact that last year farm fire losses increased! from $139 million in 1953 to $157 million, mil-lion, with approximately 3000 lives lost. Better precautions around the farm, availablity of simple fire extinguishing ex-tinguishing equipment and a community com-munity fire-fighting organization would have prevented or minimized many of these fires. The same basic bas-ic safeguards would have prevented prevent-ed many of the 4000 fires in schools the thousands of costly fires in business establihments, and the many fires i nhomes which cause not only heart-breaking personal per-sonal property losses but often the loss of loved ones. Next week is Fire Prevention Week. Let's all join hands to make it really effective through increased increas-ed individual watchfulness to keep fires from starting, and community commun-ity preparedness to stop those that do start with a minimum of loss. |
