Show Campaign to Fill National Guard Ranks Set for Oct. 8 A campaign tailored to sait-guard sait-guard the nation's security and to fill the ranks of the Utah National Guard is set for Saturday (Oct. 8) through Utah. "Operation Safeguard" is the name given the one-day ail-out recruiting re-cruiting drive fcr Utah National Guard uints in all quarters of the State. Every Utah Army Guardsmen will be involved in the intensive drive Saturday. All units will meet for drills Saturday morning, and after two hours of armory train-j train-j ing, will spend the bulk of the day bringing in new members. Aircraft flyovers, downtown displays, dis-plays, jeep motorcases. armory op-enhouses op-enhouses and airplane rides fcr new members will be among the activities occurring in many of the Utah communities. The project title "Operation Safeguard" was chosen because of the National Guard's position as the nation's f irst line . of reserve and "citizen-soldier"' defense for more than 300 years, said Brig. Gen. Maxwell E. Rich, Utah adjutant ad-jutant general. Strength of the Army Guard in Utah now stands at approximately approximate-ly 3,400 officers and men, but there are several hundred vacancies to be filled. Intent of the1 drive is to bring units as close as possible to 100 per oent of authroized strength, General Rich added. Air National Guard units now are nearly full. "Operation Safeguard" activities in Utah County will center around Lehi, American Fork, Orem, Pro vo, Springville, Spanish Fork, where units of the National Guard are located1. |
