Show An Editorial SUMMER IS FOR ENJOYMENT Summer, 1960, arrived officially last Tuesday. The night of June 21 was the shortest of the year. It goes without saying of course, that the days for the next several weeks will be long, bright and warm. More daylight hours means more time for work, play and relaxation. People will spend more hours out of doors each day. They will also travel more miles and engage in more than normal physical exercise. . All this can be wholesome fun or it may end in tragedy. It all depends upon the amount of common sense that folks mix with their recreational activity. The .sun-feels warm and relaxing. But too much exposure to the violet rays may cause severe sunburn or even sunstroke sun-stroke or heat exhaustion. "Take it easy, if you aren't used to it," is good advice. As people travel more miles and drive for longer hours, highway accidents mount up. Travel fatigue and "highway hypnosis" take their deadly toll every summer. Eyes should be rested by glancing off the highway at frequent fre-quent intervals and no one should continue to drive when sleepy or over-tired. Water sports swimming, boating and water skiing are stimulating recreation. But lakes, rivers and irrigation canals are a tragic menace for the foolish and unwary. When death from drowning occurs, i'; is invariably because the victim did something he shouldn't or failed to do something he should. Summer is a wonderful season of the year, but autumn in Utah is gorgeous too. With a little restraint, caution and common sense we may all stay aliveto enjoy them both. |
