Show Girls Staters Are Home After Interesting Week Pleasant Grove's three Girls Staters, Marianne Washburn, Judy Ju-dy Larson and Judy Wells, returned re-turned home Sunday after spending spend-ing a week at Utah State University Univer-sity attending the youth conference, confer-ence, sponsored by the American Legion Department of Utah. The more than 300 outstanding Utah girls said goodby to newly-made newly-made friends Sunday afternoon after hearing an address, "The Art of Living," by Dr. W. W. Richards, assistant director of the Logan Institute of Religion. Two Salt Lake City girls Andrea Ellis and Jan Lambert, were elected to attend Girls Nation Na-tion at Washington D.C., as "Senators" from Utah. Dianna Summerhays, also of Salt Lake City, the 1960 Governor Gover-nor of Girls State, addressed the delegates at Saturday night's inaugural in-augural reception. In a letter to Mrs. Karl Banks, past president of American Legion Le-gion Auxiliary Unit 70, Pleasant Grove Girls Stater . Marianne Washburn expressed the sentiments senti-ments of the three local delegates as follows: Living so closely in the spirit of Democracy this past week at Utah Girls State has been one of the richest experiences of my life. It has made me feel veiy humble humble because I know there are many girls who would like and deserve this wonderful opportunity. It is also a great challenge to mei a challenge to come back to my community and live, feel and do the part that is expected of me. ""One of the things that I will always treasure is my association with the other citizens of Girls State. I feel that this above all, has and will help me to become a better citizen by teaching me to adjust, to get along, and to be tolerant of the opinions and beliefs be-liefs of others. For indeed, is he who cannot get along in his own community a good citizen? "I will be ever grateful to the American Legion Auxiliary for sponsoring this program. I hope I can keep the knowledge and enthusiasm I have for our way of life in this Democracy because be-cause I know that even with its faults, it is the best way of life there is. "A grateful citizen of Utah Girls State, Marianne Washburn" |
