Adams mui the members of the city council at the regular mooting- held Monday night at the city hall. A large delegation of citizens; representing; the Chamber of Commerce and loc;U businessmen was present at the meeting'. Thru their spokesman, Junius A. West, a formal request was made for the city, to open dead end Main Street from Center Street to First North. According to information present pre-sent ed sixty-day options have been secured by the C of C on nil the property involved in the street opening'. In keeping with the plan proposed pro-posed by Mr. West the project would be a joint undertaking-- by the City and Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. The C of C would buy two parcels of real estate priced at a total of $7,000 and the city would purchase the remainder. City Recorder Lewis J. Har-mer Har-mer estimates the city's share of the. improvement would be approximately ap-proximately $:10,000 including- a $1,000 building removal program and street construction on top of the $26,000 for real estate. After considerable discussion the delegation withdrew and the council members voted to take the matter under study and advisement, ad-visement, with a decision promised prom-ised in the immediate future. Plans for a proposed tri-city airport for Pleasant Grove, American Am-erican Fork and Lehi were presented pre-sented by Merrill Liston, in wliich he explained reasons for developing develop-ing an airport. Principal reason given was such an airport would be a drawing point for industries to come into this area. He explained ex-plained the proposal to build the airport with government and state aid as well as contributions to the city. He estimated the cost of the airport at about $100,000. Ellis W. Mower and Carl Clegg of the Utah County Civil Defense program attended the council meeting to encourage the city to avail itself of the films, literature and speakers available on Civil Defense. The construction of the proposed propos-ed 1,500,000 gallon culinary wat er storage tank moved nearer to culmination with a discussion of ways and means of financing the n i u c h-nee d ed project. According to Mr. Ilarmer, the cash outlay for building of Uie water storage facility would entail en-tail the floating of "General Obligation" Ob-ligation" bonds. There would be no difficulty in selling the bonds, Mr. Hanner said. Salt Lake City finance firms have approved the project and proffered to purchase pur-chase the bonds. A special meeting for a reading read-ing of the proposed ordinance concering the water bond issue was called for next Monday, April Ap-ril 2-1. The proposal calls for a bond issue of $95,000 to construct con-struct a culinary water storage tank of either one million or Hi million gallon capacity to be determined de-termined after further study. Mayor Adams was authorized to appoint a commit tee to work with the Chamber of Commerce in an effort to eliminate the traffic traf-fic hazards at both highway entrances en-trances to Pleasant Grove. A delegation will be sent to meet with the State Road Commission Com-mission relative to the matter. The delegation will demand that "channeling safety islands" be constructed at both places. Approval was voted for the new city employees retirement plan as passed by the 1961 Legislature. Legis-lature. If the employees also approve, ap-prove, the plan will go into effect at once. Mayor Adams was also authorized auth-orized to appoint a committee to work with representatives from American Fork and Lehi to work for a Tri-Oity Airport to sei-ve all three communities. Earl Hooley and Ted Nielson were granted a beer license to operate op-erate the "Spade Tavern," formerly form-erly the "Red Hut." |
