Show Leaders See Mine Opened By Stake On Church Plan Accounts of a coal mine owned and operated under the Church Security Se-curity program were related here this week by members of a party who visited the mine in Emery county last week. In the group from American Fork were President Clifford E. Young, Bishop John Pulley, Bishop Frank G. Shelley, Bishop Joseph H. Storrs, and President Earl S. Greenwood. They were entertained and. conducted conduct-ed on their tour by President Frank Killian of Emery stake. ' ; Samples of coal from the interesting inter-esting mine were brought , back by the party. They are on display at ithe Peoples State Bank. ' Striking feature of the project is the fine attitude of the men who are engaged in developing the mine and preparing it for steady production, according to President Clifford E. Young. Emery stake is included in the same region as Alpine stake, under the Security Program, President Young said. While some allotments for farm and garden products were made for the stake, the stake was unable to make up a fair quota for the Security program from produce alone. Upon suggestion of President Killian, Kill-ian, coal resources were tapped, in order that the stake might furnish coal in place of produce. An undeveloped unde-veloped claim was acquired, and by an additional outlay of cash and contributed labor is now almost ready for production. It is located near Orangeville and Castle Dale. An unusual feature of the vein is that the coal near the surface was not charred, as is usually the case. Good quality coal was encountered from the first, and the mine has now been opened into vein 14 feet thick. , A road has been constructed, and preparations are being made to ship from the mine. The coal will be used only under the Security program, pro-gram, and will not compete on the market with other commercial coal. While the many sights at the mine were of great interest, most impressive impres-sive was the spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm of the men working there, President Young declared. . . n i |
