Show Speakers Stress Attentiveness To Duties In Church MEMBERS OF GENERAL M. I. A., R. S. BOARDS ATTEND Alpine stake quarterly conference conventions of the Mutual Improvement Improve-ment association and Relief society were held Saturday and Sunday in the stake tabernacle under direction of Stake Superintendent C. A. Grant and President May Halliday of the M. I. A. and President Maud Chris-tensen Chris-tensen of the Relief society. President Pres-ident Clifford E. Young presided at general sessions Leading Discussions in departmental departmen-tal work and speaking at general sessions were Philo T. Farnsworth, Werner Kiepe, Marba C. Josephson, and Grace C. Neslen of the M. I. A. general board; Janet Thompson of the Relief society general board, and Frank Evans, president of the Eastern East-ern States L. D. S. mission. Meetings Saturday evening and Sunday morning were for stake and ward boards of the two organizations. organiza-tions. Problems incident to Relief society and M. I. A. work of the stake were presented by local workers work-ers with a resume and suggestions for solutions to problems being given by general board members. At 10 a. m. Sunday a general session ses-sion for all stake members convened conven-ed with President Clifford E. Young presiding. Music was furnished by the Relief society Singing Mothers group and Mildred Chipman, vocal soloist. Speaking on the subject: "Ye Are The Salt of the Earth", Janet Thompson of the Relief society board pointed out the value of faithfulness faith-fulness to duty in accomplishing life's purpose.' Other speakers at the session were Philo T. Farnsworth and Grace C. Neslen of the M. I. A. board who treated 'phases of "The Road To Happiness" and declared : leisure guidance, spiritual growth,' study and testimony as essential milestones mile-stones along that road. The invocation was offered by Robert L. Ashby and Sanford Bingham Bing-ham pronounced the benediction. The afternoon meeting convened at 2 p. m., with music by the stake choir directed by Kenneth J. Bird. The opening prayer was by Clare Christensen. Elder Philo T. Farnsworth praised the work of the M. I. A. in Alpine stake and urged loyalty and devotion devo-tion to ideals of the organization. Janet Thompson, speaking for the Relief society, compared church leaders to guideposts on a highway, declaring observance of their instructions in-structions will result in happiness and security for Latter-day Saints. Other speakers at the meeting were Sanford Bingham, Ann Clay-son Clay-son and Frank Evans and Irwin Clawson, who expressed appreciation apprecia-tion for opportunities afforded them to do missionary work for the church. A vocal solo by Nan Chip-man Chip-man interspersed the talks. Ernest Seastrand pronounced the benediction. The Sunday evening session was under direction of the M. I. A. and featured a "Youth Conference," which carried out the theme: "By love serve one another". After being introduced by Mrs. May Halliday, as president of Alpine stake M Men, Phil Jensen conduct-er conduct-er the exercises which included music by a string group composed of Maxine Taylor, Leland Friday, Chloe Friday, " Howard Paxman, Betha Storrs, and Edith Clark; and quartet numbers by Clare Christensen, Christen-sen, Kenneth Robinson, Lue Groes-beck Groes-beck and Fern Robinson. ' Two-minute talks were given by Genevieve Beck, Don Devey, Louise Hayward, John Walker, Merline Gardner and Mac Groesbeck. A group of Gleaner Girls read the M. I. A. theme in choral unison. Mrs. Marba C. Josephson discussed dis-cussed the topic "Our Faith In Youth" and Werner Kiepe treated "New Horizons For Youth". The invocation was by Sanford Bingham, and benediction was pronounced by Sarah Shelley. |
