Mike Smith presents awards to Lindon baseball winners By KALYN SECRETAN "Anything you do, do your best," Mike Smith offered his advice to the Lindon boys teams at an awards ceremony last week. Smith is a special young man who was recently drafted by the Boston Celtics. Smith is a high school in football and bas-ketball. He was an basketball player at BYU. "Always do your best, whether you are right handed,-- left handed, baseman or fielder. It doesn't mat-ter where you play," Smith told the boys. Smith gave up baseball at 15, as he decided playingvolleyball would help him more with basketball. He remembers that in the sec-ond grade baseball was his whole life. It was all he wanted to do. One elementary teacher loved sports and gave extra credit for participation and baseball was the most exciting part of his life. Mike remembers a story about a young, bright kid who played base-ball. He could hit hard and make the most home runs and played first base. He lived in a little old town and a great philosopher ruled the town. He was king of the town and most people came to him with their prob lems or to settle quarrels. The bright kid thought if he could stump the philosopher, everyone would look up to him. He went to the philosopher with a little bird in his hand. He asked the philosopher, "Is this bird dead or alive?" Now the philosopher had never been wrong all his life. When asked if the bird was dead or alive, he said, "If I tell you it's alive, you will crush it and it will be dead. If I say it is dead, you will open your hand and it will fly away. "The only thing I know, the fate of the bird is now in your hands." Smith stated that what you make of your life is in your hands. As a kid, Smith was best in baseball and tried to be best in whatever he did. "Try to be the best brother, best son or daughter, the best baseball player or student. Then youll be happy with yourself," he said. Smith said it was great to be there and he presented trophies to individual players, winning teams and special awards. A crowd of people gathered at the pavilion for the ceremony and enjoyed a watermelon bust follow-ing the presentation.
