People, Politics & Policy Service to city is serious business By E. MARK BEZZANT James L. Sorenson is to be con-gratulated for his willingness to ask that the University of Utah Medical School not be renamed after him. U ofU President Chase Peter-son ought to honor that request if he has not already done so. The nominating conventions to be held early next month in Pleas-ant Grove are serious business, and the average man and worn an on the street ought to be very concerned about who will sit on those city council seats and in the seat of the mayor. The system works like this. Each of the two parties in Pleasant Grove will meet at their respective places and select three people to run for office. This year the three offices that will be up for grabs are two city council seats and the office of mayor. Generally these party nominat-ing conventions are attended by fewer than 25 people. Sometimes only a handful of people attend, while at other times the convention might be "packed" with as many as 40 or 50 people. Party officials usually contact people whom they think might be interested and ask them to run on their respective tickets. According to news reports, Mayor Holdaway and Keith Christeson have indi-cated they want to seek office again. That means the Citizens Party will need to find at least one other per-son to nominate for the second city council post. The Peoples Party, on the other hand, apparently will need to find people for all three positions, since early reports indicate that Coun-cilman Dale Warburton probably will not seek a second term. That will be a big task for the leadership of the Peoples Party. The reason it will be a big task is because Mayor Holdaway still en-joys a positive image in the commu-nity. Under his leadership the city has accomplished a number of sig-nificant things, not the least of which have been the building of a city hall, a library, senior citizens cen- - ter, and now the addition fire fighting facilities. .(, The mayor would be the (i, point out other things whi equally as important but visible. Some city employs H once supported the Peoples P, have turned to the Citizens satisfaction with' mayor's leadership. Keith Christeson also good image in the commuA has been an advocate of the and has spent a great deal oft serving the citizens duringhisj term in office. None of these positive tin should deter good people from s ing office, however. It would ne inappropriate at all for Mi Holdaway to be challengedbyg people within the party and I the opposite party. After all, thi an election, not a coronation, ft people who are interested ins ing the people should not hesi to seek office, without waiting;: approached. Sure you are going to gets! irate calls and have to but the bottom line is th America is to be made bet: must begin right here in places Pleasant Grove. You and others can anddot a difference. I also believe it created a less than positive image towards the Postal Service, when, in fact, we went the extra mile to solve the problem that was created when the erroneous bar code for Orem City water bills was used by the printer on the Pleasant Grove City water bills. bar code is incorrect, as bar is very important of all mail i-ncoming years if we are to keep postage rates in line with l; The only reason we allowed ant Grove city to block and continue to use the-- '; lopes was so they would notnf discard over 25,000 envelop It was also inaccurate to the residents that a tracer co--; filed at the post office. I personally contacted the auto-mation coordinator in Salt Lake City and had him take the direct holdout for Orem City off of the automation temporarily so there would not be a mixture of the two as both were blue envelopes with black printing. We then contacted the Orem post office and had them put a watch for any misdirected envelopes. Amajority oftheenvelopes were caught right at this office before being dispatehed to Salt Lake City lor processing by very dedicated clerks and letter carriers who were watching for them. Orem City was also contacted and informed of the problem. They were asked to watch lor any misdirected envelopes.
