Show School plans to collect million .soup, other labels to get a van If you take one million canned food labels and stretch them from end to end, they could reach clear from American Fork to the end of a dream. A dream, in fact, that students at Peterson School for the handicapped have for a van that will open tip a new world of activities for them. Students and faculty at Peterson are busy counting labels now, but say their goal looks helpless unless they have the help of the public. If they gather the one million labels, they will be able to get the 15-passenger 15-passenger van free from the Campbell Labels for Education program, according to Kay Beck, co-ordinator of the program. "We hope the public will help us in our effort," Ms. Beck said, adding the Dodge Ram van would make itA possible for the school to take the students on outings and learning experiences. "If we get enough support from everybody, we can make our goal," she said. "We need the van to take the children out for appropriate social action - to work on their community adaptability . skills and on-job practical experiences Presently the school has no transportation that makes this possible, Ms. Beck said. "We can teach various skills in the classroom, but the children need to learn how to do these things out in the community, whether it be to learn what they do at a gas station, or how to purchase items at a store and count change. "They can learn how to be well mannered at school but if they can't do it in the community, we haven't taught them anything." If you don't use Campbell soup, you can still help. Also accepted are labels from Swanson products, Prego, Pepridge Farms, Franco American, Vlasic Pickles (the lid), and Mrs. Pauls products. Although located in American Fork, the Peterson School serves youngsters with handicaps from throughout the Alpine School District - from Fairfield-Cedar Fort through Orem. If you have labels, contact the school or drop them off at the school, located at 169 N. 1100 East. |
