Show Review - Wednesday, March 28, 1984 - Page ' lQ Pleasant Grove plays pre-seaso- n games home at shortstop. Thane Eyre and Corey Conder have been seeing a lot of playing time in the outfield. Wright, another junior has been alternating in the infield. Joining the juniors and seniors, several sophomores are working out and could see varsity time as the season progresses. Here's the Viking schedule tor the year: March 28 4:00 Spanish Fork March 30 4:00 At Springville April 4 4:00 At Payson April 6 4:00 Ixhi April 11 4:00 Carbon April 13 4:00 At Spanish Fnri April 16 4:00 Springville April 17 4:00 Payson April 18-2- Las Vegas Toum April 25 4:00 At Ihi April 27 4:00 At Carbon May 3 Inter-Regio- n a., May 2 State TournamJ5 Playing around and through the snow and rain, Pleasant Grove baseballers have been able to get in several n games. Against Granger, Shane Phillips lined a bases loaded double in the bottom of the last inning to give the Vikes an 8-- 7 win over the Lancers. Phillips went 4 for 5 and had three rbi's. The Granger win was followed by a game that the Vikes would like to quickly forget. Hosting American Fork on March 20 was not a good day for Viking biorhythms. Led by a Brock Knight first inning home run, the Cavemen pounded Pleasant Grove 24-- Junior first baseman, Mike Jensen, hit a home run for the Vikes. At Timpview on the 22nd, Pleasant Grove exploded for six first inning runs and didn't look back in beating the'Thunderbirds 14-3- . Again Phillips had four hits with Matt Norman and Paul Bronson picking up three hits each. The Vikes pounded out 17 hits in beating Timpview. Friday, Shaun Story went the distance against Orem and the Vikes played long ball to dump the Tigers 10-- Pleasant Grove hitters backed up Story's five hit pitching with 14 hits that included four homers. Norman's second inning two run shot broke a 3-- 3 tie to put Pleasant Grove ahead to stay. Bronson and Shawn Bezzant had back to back round trippers in the third inning and Steve Hansgen had a solo shot in the fourth. Hansgen's homer landed on the hill in left field while Bezzants' bounced off the tin roof of the shed over the fence in right field. Leading 8-- 5 after five innings the Vikes added a pair of funs in the sixth. Norman singled in Derek Wright and Bronson brought Phillips home with a base hit. Story was impressive with a complete game performance that came with the weather providing the warmest day yet this spring. Last Saturday, the Vikes took advantage of another day of good weather to host Roy. Bezzant pitched a good game and belted a home run to help boost the Vikes to a 5-- 4 win over the Roy Royals. With league play starting today when Pleasant Grove hosts Spanish Fork, the Viking starting lineup looks to have Jesse Walker leading off and playing second base. Norman has been hitting second as the designated hitter and if his arm gets well he will take over at second base, a position he played all during his junior year. Norman is still having problems from a football football shoulder injury that hampers his throwing but he can still swing the bat and has been hitting very well this spring. Phillips hits third and is playing excellent defense in centerfield. Bronson catches and hits fourth with Bezzant fifth and playing first base. Jensen plays first when Bezzant pitches. Tracy Flinders looks good at third and the junior infielder has had a hot bat in n games. By CORBY MORRIS Pleasant Grove's soccer team has picked up the pace in pre-seas-games as they prepare for their first region game today at Spanish Fork. Pleasant Grove's first n game was against the current State Champions, American Fork. American Fork knocked in four goals by the end of the game with Pleasant Grove scoring once on a great corner kick by David Willes. Since this game, Pleasant Grove has really pulled together. In the second American Fork game, Pleasant Grove scored first. The team showed great improvement but American Fork snuck by Pleasant Grove 3-- Some of the assets returning from last year are, Don Field, David Willes and Wade Welcker. These players along with other athletes on the team should prove to be an excellent soccer unit. With the teams' skill advancements and coaching from Rod Jackman and Leon Smith, the 1984 season looks very promising for Pleasant Grove. .1 ") Dr. Clair Palmer is changing fj tne name of his practice to a American Fork Vision Center lid . A roast beef dinner served by Dan Harrison and the J.V. Cheerleaders started the evening. The awards presentation started with Coach Darrel Henry giving a talk about the difficulties of wrestling and the dedication it requires. He then passed out the lettering certificates. Team captains (Phil Cook and Thane Eyre) were then awarded 'Team Captain" awards for their excellent leadership of the Viking team. The distribution of the awards resembled the 1984 grammy awards sweep by Michael Jackson. The winner this time wasn't a singer but a 167 pound senior who received the team captain award, the most 30 second takedowns award, best individual record award, fastest fall award, most falls award, and to top it off the outstanding wrestler award. His name is Phil Cook. Thane Eyre received the captains award and the most inspirational award. The weight puller award went to Shawn Pueblo (who lost 20 pounds). Senior John Nielson was given the best attitude award. The most improved wrestler went to Darren Jackson. Freshmen Lonnie Truex took two awards: the most 10 second escapes award and the grand slam award. Phil Shurtleff of the Daily Herald was present to award senior and region-stat- e placers with a blown-u- p picture of them wrestling. Coaches Darrel Henry, Ray Fugal, David Sherod, and Doug Bluth would like to thank the town, faculty, and the administration for the help and support. They also would like to point out the work done by managers Lynn Reimshcisal, and Sherman Bullough. Coach Henry also feels recognition of the wrestlerettes and wrestling cheerleaders is due. If you see one of these wrestlers pat him on the back and say "Good Job!" P.G. Recreation to hold Softball clinic March 31 Pleasant Grove City Recreation will be sponsoring a softball skills clinic on Saturday, March 31, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Community Center. If the weather is good, those that register will go down to Shannon Field (by the rodeo grounds). The clinic will feature eight players, two U.S.A. n team members, and three former national batting champions. Besides being talented in their own right, each is a qualified instructor with many years of clinic experience. Those who will be involved include, Vaughn Alvey, Terry Stapely, Mona Stevens, Larry Miller, Brendan Keehan, Dennis Dahle, Bobby Hackmeister, Chris Hansen, Jill Jensen, Ken Hackmeister, and many more. Clinics are structured to have an adequate number of instructors for each area. Included will be pitching, hitting, slap and run, bunting, left handers, base running, coaching and managing, catching (theory), fielding in both the infield and outfield. The emphasis will be on the individual instruction and work. This will be a participation clinic, not just a lecture. This clinic will be under the auspices of the Utah State Softball Association. for the clinic will be both at the Pleasant Grove Recreation and at Top 10 Sports in the University Mall. All ages are invited, including little boys and girls to men and women. |
