Show Volunteers needed for Handicapped Awareness Handicapped Awareness is an agency in the community involved with helping people help themselves. them-selves. Their goal is to reach out to physically handicapped adults with a variety of programs aimed at giving these people an opportunity not only to improve physically, but to live fuller and happier lives. There is an on-going need for volunteers according to Barry Fillmore, Recreation Coordinator. The crucial need at this time is for volunteers who can help in the swimming program each Wednesday Wed-nesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Orem Recreation Center. Participants in the swimming therapy have varying degrees of phsycial disabilty, many of them ned someone with them constantly with them in the water. The success of the program depends upon reliable volunteers. Mr. Fillmore says that the agency will cooperate fully in the transportation of volunteers if needed. Volunteers living in the Orem area can be picked up by the agency van, and Fillmore will be able to pick up others in his own van. He Action Center of United WAy at 374-8108: 374-8108: A voluntary scout leader is needed at the Peterson School for handicapped students in American Fork. Volunteers are also needed at the school to help young children in exercise therapy such as learning to ride tricycles, using the swings and other playground equipment. The Oakridge School can use volunteers such as assisting for the school Christmas production, office help, and lunch helpers. The Provo Adult High School Refugee Program needs volunteers to teach survival English to refugees. No experience is necessary - they will train and supervisie the volunteer tutors. Especially needed are residents of Orem, American Fork, Springville and Provo. Volunteer families, group andor individuals are needed for the Sub-for-Santa program. This consists of giving a toy or game, andor an item of clothing for children between bet-ween the ages of 2 and 16. says there is a shortage of female volunteers who are needed to help the women in the program get into swimming suits and get dressed afterwards. Handicapped Awareness serves about 700 handicapped adults in a variety of ways described as H.E.A.R.T. - programs set up in ; Housing,.. Employment,;. Ac- cessibility tto public buildings), , Recreation and Transportation as ; they apply to handicapped persons. Because of the broad scope of programs, there is always a need for volunteer help.
