Show Citizen, Review, Free Press, Dec. 14, 1983 - Page 13 Utah Pageant of the Arts presents 'Nutcracker' December 27 throegh 30 Utah Pageant of the Arts oresents the third annual product-ion of the "Nutcracker," featuring the Utah Youth Ballet, resident company of the dance Pageant. Tt,e dazzling new production features the traditional Christmas I fantasy ballet that has charmed audiences since it was introduced in St Petersburg, Russia, more than 90 years ago. performances will be presented Dec. 27, 28, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. and Dec! 30 at 2 p.m. at American Fork ggh School theater. Tickets are only $4 for evening performances, for the matinee, with a special new "Nutcracker Party" offered to limited patrons following the matinee performance. The "Nut-cracker Party" will feature refreshments, and a photograph with the Nutcracker cast member of the child's choice. Cost for this backstage party is $2. Jacqueline P. Colledge, formerly a soloist with Ballet West, is director of Utah Youth Ballet and artistic director for this new version 0f "The Nutcracker." ' one of the exciting new features of the 1983 production is found in Act Ii, with a new variation of an English theme from the original " Tchaikovsky's score. The "Old English Dance" is part of ,hp charming choreography created by Mrs Colledge to add freshness and vitality to the Christmas fantasy that has become a tradition of the holiday season for ballet lovers throughout the world. Guest artists for the production will be Mark Lanham. formerly a principal dancer with Ballet West where he was one of the highest ranked male dancers in the com-pany, lie has appeared with manv outstanding ballet companies and now is furthering his career from his home in Anianllo, Texas. His major role with he Utah Pageant of the Arts "Nutcracker" will be Cavalier for every evening per formanee in the Grand Pas I)e Deux. Don Sparks, the second guest artist, will perform the Russian variation in Act 11. He has appeared with prestigious companies throughout the country. Costumes for the Pageant "Nutcracker" will be designed and created by Sarah Price, formerly wardrobe mistress with Ballet West and a nationally known ballet designer. Technical excellence for the production is assured by the same staff that stages the annual Pageant of the Arts with David Oran . Brockbank as producing director. The cast will include 90 dancers of ' all ages, including members of the Utah Youth Ballet, as well as students from Jacqueline's School of Ballet and younger children and adults from the Wasatch Front communities appearing in the opening "party" scene. While the choreography is new, the traditional featurs of the production are written into the score by Tchaikovsky, based on a story written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffman. Because of the popularity of the ballet, patrons are encouraged to make their reservations early to assure good seats.
