Howard Nelson family, formerly of Pleasant Grove have served foreign missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da-y Saints. Jan, Judy Ann, Merry Joye, Jewel, Janis and James Nelson all served missions. Their other son, Jerry, chose to serve in the military. ; The family moved from Pleasant - Grove in 1969 to St. George where " they live at the present time. The Nelson's also have 33 grand--r children. When the family moved '. - from Pleasant Grove half the ' family was still living at home. They had lived at 555 N. 300 E., Pleasant Grove. They now reside at 744 N. 1800 E., St. George. Before they moved their oldest son, Jan, had served a mission to I Sweden from 1956 to 1959. Judy I Ann returned from her mission to : England in 1964 and Merry Joy ; came hsmin from her Scotland mission in 1966. Jewel served in the German mission from 1970 til 1972 after they moved to St. George. Janis served in the Netherlands mission from 1976 til 1978 and James served in Denmark from 1978 to 1980. Mr. Nelson and his wife, Mary, feel that the reason so many of the children served fulltime missions was because the family did many things together while the children were growing up. They all played in a family band and performed at weddings and church functions. The children were able to help support themselves on their missions and during their education with money raised from participating in the band. - The family traveled extensively with all of them going around the world twice. They visited such countries as Palestine, Jordan, Israel, Irak, Russia and other European countries when the children were younger. One thing that the family has found interesting is that all the children's mission were to European countries. It was a thrill when Jan was called to Sweden where Mr. Nelson's mother was born and when James was called to Denmark where his father had been born. The boys were able to research on the family lines. Jan dedicated the grave of the last known relative of the family in Sweden and James was able to find the old family home and brought back some stones from it. Although the children helped with their missions, financially, the parents faid for most of the support. "We were blessed to be able to do it," Mr. Nelson explained. Now all seven children are happily married. 4i " 1 I JOHN (iOODMAN KI.DON I'AI,MKK Returning missionaries to speak John Goodman Elder John Goodman, son of Bishop H.
