Holding Can Be Fun When It's On 'Them' i . . . i lot r , &w . f ' " n . ., " i r - . . , . . s ; By JACK HILL "Holding," the coach screams and then in a more pleading voice asks, "Can't you see the holding?" Football officials at every level, but especially in the college game, are bombarded with this complaint. Both coaches and players continually ask officials to watch the holding. . College rule makers yielded to coaches desires and liberalized pass protection blocking rules for this season. Pass protection blockers can now use their hands like the professionals do and when the op-posing quarterback has ample time to pass, the defensive coach claims "holding." In a game I worked last weekend, a Catholic coach with an Irish name, started hollering about holding before the game started. Midway in the third period, in front of my sideline part-ner, he got down on one knee, crossed himself and questioned, "Won't you please call holding?" My fellow official, in a benign voice calmly stated, "that won't do you any good, coach. I'm Jewish." Jump ing up, the coach stalked off mumbling, "just my luck to get the only Jewish official in the con-ference." Everyone got a chuckle out of the incident, even the coach. But the holding complaints do have some basis. If officials called all the technical violations of the new holding rule, the game would take twice as long or longer to play. The blocking rule has made for a more exciting, wide open game and reducing the penalty for holding from 15 to 10 yards has kept many a drive going. All coaches want "holding" called.. .but not on their team! DETERMINATION - Jason Stein (9) turns corner and heads for the end zone in fourth grade flag football game Saturday.
