Show Big News in Utah Skiing The biggest news in Utah skiing this year may be the biggest news in United States skiing. Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, will officially open December 12, 1981, with four triple chairs and one double chairlift serving 30 groomed runs. Utah's newest ski area opens its premiere season with an exciting ski package of the finest amenities and has its sites set on yet another 12 years of 'carefully planned developments. Located within the Park City limits, just a 45 minute drive from Salt Lake International Airport, the area's facilities are being created under the watchful eye of Deer Valley president, James A. Nassikas, who is also president of San Francisco's Stanford Court Hotel. Deer Valley boasts several attributes at-tributes which, not obvious tto the layman, make for better skiing. Most of Deer Valley's ski trails face north. Since the winter sun travels across the southern ski, Deer Valley snow will stay deeper and stay longer. And the runs have been designed to follow the 'fall line' (the imaginary line which an object rolling down the hill would follow) from lop to bottom. This means skiers will not experience ex-perience the uncomfortable sensation of being srawn to one side of the run and will not be forced to ski flat 'run ' out' areas to reach the lifts. One attribute which will be very obvious to any Deer Valley skier is the planned lack of lift lines. The resort will limit the number of skiers- on the mountains each day to insure uncrowded conditions. For this reason, ski reservations are recomended. Olympic gold medalist and former World Champion, Stein Erickson, will direct skiing activities at Deer Valley. Once the world's premier ski" racer, Stein's emphasis is now on the quality ski experience for recreational skiers. One facet of Deer Valley that particularly pleases him is the variety of ski terrain. From the first day of skiing through the next 12 years of development, there will always be a wide selection of runs for every ability. The quality of the Deer Valley experience does not end when a skier decides to take a break or hang up his skies for the day. Available this season are two impressive day lodges, one of the Deer Valley floor and the other a thousand feet up the mountain at what will become America's only mid-mountain village. The lower area, Snow Park Village, is served by Snow Park Center, which offers a cafeteria, equipment rental, ski shop and other amenities. Also located in Snow Park Center is a child care facility. |
