Show Student Off to Quebec Park City High School student, Caroline Bassett, is on her way to Quebec, Canada as a participant in the American Field Service (AFS) program. Bassett said she will stay with a family in Quebec and go to school there for a year. She said she's looking forward to learning the language which is French. "I've only had one year of French but I'd like to major in foreign languages at UCLA," said Bassett. Bassett is the last of three girls to leave her home for school, but she said her family is excited for her and thinks its a "great opportunity." The program costs AFS participants a little over $2,000, but Bassett said loans are available that can be paid off monthly so she said, "it's a misconception that you have to have ' money in order to be in the program." The family Bassett will be staying with receives no monies for providing her with room and board but becomes part of the "exchange" program. According to Bassett there are several different AFS programs varying from a year in a foreign country or a summer abroad to a domestic ", program allowing students to spend each year at a different high school in the U.S. Bassett said she didn't have a choice in where she would be sent for her senior year but she was allowed to give FS officials a list of suggestions in addition to specifying a French-speaking country. She said she's only had a year of French in school but she's been reading "a lot about Quebec, its customs and religion". How does she feel about spending a year in Canada? Bassett responded. "I'm excited and kind of nervous, I'll really miss Park City." |
