Show Roxanne Does It Again Park City's skiing ace Rox-anne Rox-anne Toly continued her winning win-ning ways here last week when she won the combined title in the 1979 Western States Championship, Cham-pionship, a four-day racing event featuring the best young racers from around the country. Roxanne's impressive win comes on the heels of her recent twelfth place finish in the World Cup held at Lake Placid, New York where she finished with the second fastest time in the1 downhill among all U.S. female . competitors. Top-ranked Cindy Nelson was the only American to beat Roxanne. Louie Leatham of Park City finished in sixteenth place Thursday during the Men's Giant Slalom competition of the Western States Championship. Roxanne finished in first place in the Giant Slalom Friday with a two-run time of 128.87, a full second ahead of second place winner Barbara Stand-teiner, Stand-teiner, and two seconds ahead of Barbie Patterson who came in thirdplace. The next day, Saturday. Roxanne finished in second place behind Pam Koonce in the Giant Slalom. Roxanne again beat U.S. Ski Team member Barbie Patterson, who had to settle for third again. Roxanne's strongest event is the downhill, but she proved during the Western STates Championship that she can finish high in other events as well. Sunday, the last day of the championship, Roxanne finished finish-ed in fifth place in slalom competition that gave her enough points, to be named over-all winner. Her time for the slalom was 133.74. Pam Koonce finished in first with a time of 131.55. Once again, Roxanne edged out Barbie Patterson in the slalom; Patterson finished one slot behind Roxanne in sixth place while Heidi Hoffman finished in tenth place. Races were run on Ladies GS course with competitors ranging in age from 16 to 18. |
