Show Miners Drop Two At State Tourney throws out of ten. The Miners outscored the Jays be seven field goals in Thursday's game. Looking at next year's team, Coach Bruce Reid was optimistic, optimis-tic, saying it could be the best team in Park City's history. St. Joseph fill m M, It was a season laced with ups and downs for the Park High Miners, having lost all their pre-season games, then roaring back like a hurricane to finish in third place in Region Eleven, qualifying for a shot at the state championship in Provo. The Miners went into the state tournament after winning the Region tournament in Coalville; and before that, ark City handily beat perennial top-ranked teams such as Wendover and St. Joseph during the regular season. The wind was knocked out of Park City Wednesday of last week when they went up against - a powerful team from Milford, ranked, one, two or three in the state all season. The Miners lost that game, 67-60, in a hard-fought-battle.--Park City got within two points of tying Milford at one point in the game, yet Milford refused to give up the lead. Park City was forced to play catch-up the whole game. Milford later went on the take second in the state tournament after losing to Gunnison in the final round. Following the Milford loss, on Thursday, park City lost a disappointing game to St. Joe, a team the Miners had beaten twice in regular season play. The score was St. Joe 44, Park City 42. Park City, obviously nervous in the first quarter against Milford, was able to score only five points in the initial six and a half minutes of play. Miner Coach Bruce Reid called time out with 1:21 left in the quarter and down, 20-5. -The first quarter ended with Milford dominating the boards. The score left Park City behind by 14 points, 23 to 9. Milford received the tip-off as the second quarter got under way; and Mike Gebauer almost immediately stole a Milford pass, threw off to Tim King who scored a basket for the Miners. Leading 1-A scorer for Milford, Ken Jones, rebounded with a quick two points followed by Miner Marty Cowin's basket inside from the key. But Milford remained on top with 6:22 left in the second quarter, leading by 12 points, 25-13. Then Park City made a surge, scoring seven quick points and holding Milford to. only two points. Tiger Coach Joe Hillock called time out with 3:29 ont he clock and tried to re-group after seeing his team lose momentum to the Miners. Milford led at this point by only seven points, 27-20. Park City turned the ball over twice- after the time out - and Milford's Jeff Atkin scored the first two points as the final minutes of the quarter ticked off. Mike Gebauer responded with a beautiful turn-around jumper, then Atkin bounced back with another two-pointer. Shortly before the half, the Tigers were ahead of ark City by ten points, but the Miners managed to cut into the lead before the second quarter ended. Park High went into the locker room down by five points, 32-27. Although ark City received the tip-off at the beginning of the third quarter, they were unable to score first as Milford's Denny Myers and Ken Jones sank baskets. Gebauer's two inside turn around shots sparked spark-ed the Miners with four points, and the score at the 6:19 mark in the quarter was Milford 36, park City 31. After the Tigers reeled off six consecutive points. Coach Reid called time out to halt Milford's drive. And at 5:09 in the third quarter, Park High was down by eleven points, 42-31. Marty Cowin and Howard Davidson teamed up to get Park City within four points oi tying Milford; and Miner Tim King also boosted Park City's scoring drive. Wtih 3:10 remaining in the third quarter, the Tigers held on to a slim 43-39 lead. Then, Marty Cowin hit for Park City, bringing the Miners within two points of tying Milford who called time out with 2:50 on the clock. The score was Milford 43, Park City 41. And Park City stayed within two points of Milford for the next minute. In fact, by the time the quarter ended, the Tigers had only a three-point lead, 49-46. Turnovers hurt Park City in the fourth quarter, enabling Milford to stretch its lead nine points with 5:23 left in the game. And at the 3:09 mark, Park City saw the lead extend to eleven points, 63-52. The Miners cut the lead to seven points, but with only 46 seconds remaining in the final quarter, it was simply not enough time to catch the Tigers. The game ended with a 67-70 victory for Milford before a large, but disappointed Park City rooting section in the old field house on the BYU campus. The loss to Milford Wednesday Wednes-day took a lot out of the Miners, Coach Reid told the Record, which contributed to their loss the next day against St. Joe. "It (Milford game) drained us," said Reid. "After the emotional and physical let down, it was hard to get up for St. Joe. We didn't play well." Coach Reid said that one of the critical factors in the Miners' loss to St. Joe resulted from the free throw line.
