Show Bonnie and Tom Matthews have found a way to enjoy here and there. They were the original owners of the Bucket, back in '63 when it was just a bar. Bonnie says there were plenty of places to party then, but nowhere to sleep. (Hmm... seems like a complaint I hear even now.) The Matthews presently make their home in Washington, D.C. parttime, where Bonnie works as an editor of government publications, i Tom has his own public relation firm. Most of their "free" time is spent here in Park City, where Bonnie says they hope to return to full time one day. Yes, Paul. ..it happens often. I'm the newcomer still, so if this waxes old I'm sorry but. ..the moon here is spectacular... spectacu-lar... It is the creamy center of an Oreo wedged between twilight and daybreak. I watch it turn an icicle into a prism of memories... An icicle takes time to build. It melts and freezes, and melts again. So do past emotions, best left behind. ..I like the analogy of watching them melt away. (You're so vain, I bet you think this last part's about you, don't you?... apologies to Carly Simon.) The moom illuminates the meadow "before me, and I swear I see something glimmering out there. Don't you?. ..Strike a vein?. ..I thought so. ..I'll be here next week. ..I'm home now... Jamie I have met a few natives in my first few days, but for the most part, we have all journeyed to here from there. I like that. ..It is a curious composite of characters charac-ters who reside in this mountain city. I think it is not happenstance happen-stance that we are sharing this space together... My "big city" friends think 1 am somewhat masochistic choosing to live in the snow and not just driving from elsewhere to play in it. For them to put on chains and "get caught in a storm" has all the makings of high drama. We here, we are survivors. Within us, there is a bit of pioneer spirit... Who would deny the music a cheer of ten people make when they have just pushed your car out of a snowbank?.. Or the ingenuity one feels when lacking an ice scraper, to use your VISA card... Or the tolerance you have when the store you needed to get into at nine o'clock that morning, can't open till two o'clock that afternoon... Facing the elements, to my "big city" friends means elbowing your way into the traffic pattern at 7:45 and descending back into it at 5:45. Oh, 1 suppose it rains sometimes some-times and gets warm at others, but I can't ever imagine LIVING in such a vanilla vacuum again. When I visited in the fall I diverted off the main road enough to discover the marvelous marve-lous shell of what looked to be an abandoned mansion. I fantasied about the inhabitants and their lives. This week I learned from Miley Jackson, that she and her sister sold the Kearns House, only after the promise it would be restored properly. Since the history of the house belongs in Park City, it's reassuring to know there are people here to protect that. Funny, how I was to know in the fall when I took nearly a roll of pictures of it, that the mansion and I would meet again. What becomes a legend most? Ask Rochelle Durant her place in the Sunn has been co-ordinating actors and housing hou-sing for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It's currently being filmed outside of town by Sunn Productions...! spoke with Paul Sand, one of the actors and he told me how he just fell in love with Park City. He's decided to find a place here. He asked me if that happened of ten... people coming here and then wanting to become a part of this area...l, of course, just smiled. (1 should warn you, Paul, land prices have changed since the Salt Lake Tribune reported: "Town lots are selling readily, and commanding com-manding a very flattering figure. Lots that two years ago sold for $10 and $20 are now bringing from $100 up." However.. How-ever.. .that was October, 1879.) |
