dedicated to the memory of ili the e mormon 0 n pioneers the setting etting was near the spot on TT S SOS SO 30 S where this band ot of pioneers turned to the lett left on the last leg to the gre great a t salt lake valley A stand was erected w where here the speaker and others were seated and in addition public address system was installed making it very plain for or all to bear even i icse who sat 01 in their cars Pr president eident r W 0 stephens of summit take was in charge and introduced the speaker and master ot of ceremonies geo asmith A smith president of the trails association for the road on the old trail ine streets of henefer were filled with and the grounds near the monument were filled to overflowing with I 1 ie crowds who came to witness this event it Is estimated that nt at least 2000 attended this dedication and it is most fitting that they did for the work of these sturdy homemakers meant their home people were here from many near by counties and states wyoming was well represented john M baxter former stake president ot of woodruff stake was present and took active part in the services ho he dedicated the monument as a perpetual memory ry of our pioneer leaders from ibish idaho emo we also had representatives which goes to show the interest taken in the event the monument the monument Is a most outstanding piece of work and stands out tor for the I 1 j workmanship of summit county made I 1 I 1 I 1 by the summit monumental works ot of hoytsville it stands on concrete base 7 I 1 feet by 5 teet feet and in the ground 4 leet feet on the concrete Is laid a granite base m 41 feet by 21 2 ia 1 feet by 8 inches binche a deep and weighs about about 1500 pounds on this large granite shaft 3 teet feet die Is placed a on face by 6 feet high and 16 inches deep tills this shaft weighs about pounds this granite came from cottonwood ton wood 9 utah product on the face ace ot of the monument three plaques appear these are made from utah copper and the characters cut 4 ut by the salt lake stamp company the top plate to the pioneers contains the skull of the buffalo on which Is written utah trails and land marks association and immediately below in bold type no 4 erected 1932 mornion mormon pioneer trail under the leadership ot of brigham young the mormon pioneers exploring their way to the valley ot of the great salt lake passed here july to 1847 orson pratts advance company reached here july others following at intervals the rear company including brigham young who was ill with moun 1 tain feer fe er encamped near here july the trail turned to the left at this point to avoid weber canyon then impassable I 1 to wagon trains as sending henefer creek to its head and passing into east canyon approximately along the route now traversed by the highway immediately under this Is the pony express plaque which has the horse and rider bound for his destination and under this plaque Is another which reads pony express trail st joseph to sacramento 1860 1861 this event will long bo be remembered by those who witnessed it and will stand as a monument to the thrift ot of the people of summit who contributed to its erection and made the ceremony and event possible the monument Is built with a recess in it and this recess will contain the list of all doners and opposite their name the amount given A history ot of
