Ho passed over the check to Desk Sergeant Anderson juat to convince con-vince tho officer that he was telling the truth The stranger, who did not wish his Identity to become known, and was Woked a.s "John Doe," proved to be a ranch owner who was passing through Ogilen and did not arrive in the city imtll late in the evenlrjg. Unfortunately he had run short of collateral and was forced to resort to the check, which ho had received from the salo of sheep. After making half a dozen futile efforts ef-forts to have the check cashed at local business houses the ranch owner own-er became desperate and decided to appeal to the police for accommodate accommoda-te ns for the night. He said It was his first night in a Jail and was therefore there-fore given the "best room" In tho city prison. |
