Joe Paulovina, on Italian at Highland Bay, was badly bad-ly stabbed, beaten up and robbed in his home near the Minnie mine at 12:30 o'clock this morning by five men Paulovina. who Is single, lives in a smalt cottage with two other miners, who were away on shift He heard a sharp rap at his door and, thinking that the other two men had returned from shift, he immediately got up and opened the door, when five men entered. Three of the number num-ber attacked him. He waa unable to make any defense with eueh odds against him and was knocked down and beaten up In a brutal manner. They also drew knives and 6tabbed him In a number of places. To verify ver-ify his story at the police station this morning, he exhibited a gash on his right side, below hl6 ribs, more than three inches long, which had bied freely. Finally he managed to elude his assailants and got away Then the bandits turned their attention atten-tion to robbing tho house. They searched every part of it, finding $135 which was hidden in various places Paulovina declared today that he could Identify three of the men and swore to John Doe complaints, upon which warrants were issued and placed in the hands of the officers, who are thoroughly investigating the matter. A trlef broke into Bourgard's meat market at 2 o'clock this morning and was In the act of carrying off a large cash register when he was discovered, end, becoming alarmed dropped it beside be-side the road not far from the market, mar-ket, and made good his escape. Jcmes P. Motherwall, who was going on shift at a late hour, Faw the man making off with it In the direction of the Copper Belt railroad. Upon being discovered, he dropped the register reg-ister near a ditch. It was evidently the man's Intention to take out the money after reaching the railroad in the rear of the market It contained con-tained considerably less than $50, no part of which is thought to be missing miss-ing He effected an entrance through the screen of the front door. John Lee fell a distance of thirty or forty feet from a high bank In the rear of the Citizens' coal yard last r.lght. He must lain where he fell eight or nine hours. He sustained painful Injuries in the region of tho hips and abdomen, though his condition condi-tion is not considered critical.
