Do Not Credit Reports. Reports from Oyeter Bay today purporting pur-porting to indicate that Col. Roosevelt Roose-velt believed his defeat at the hands of the New York state Republloan committee wag tho result of an agreement agree-ment betwoen President Taft and some of tho "old guard" leaders in the state wore received at Beverly today to-day with little short of consternation. As tho reports were not credited to nny responsible person no attention was officially paid to them. So far as the statement that there was an agreement to defeat Col Roosevelt to which President Taft was a party 13 concerned there is said to bo no truth In IL President Taft from the flr6t has endeavored to obtain harmony har-mony In New York state. He urged all the leadera to try to get together and has been anxious that Col. Roos-ve't's Roos-ve't's wishes should be consulted and evon went so far on one occasion as to exclaim to a very prominent New York politician: Avoid a Fight. ,;For God's sake avoid a fight." It was also said at Beverly today that It was believed that If the person who Inspired the statement from Oy-wter Oy-wter Bay had been in possession of the facts, the statements would never have been made. Representative Iymgworth of Ohio, a son-in-law of Colonel Roosevelt, ha3 boon present at nearly all of the recent conferences confer-ences which President Taft has held at Beverly. He was present throughout all the conferences with Vice President Sherman Sher-man yesterday. Mr. Longworth, It is believed, knows every move the president haa made. He will see Col. Roosevelt at Oyster Bay on Saturday. |
