Show THE CENSUS RETURNS. Californian8 are claiming that the census figures will give California Cali-fornia over two million population, and entitle that state to ten congressmen, if the apportionment by the next congress is one congressman con-gressman to each 225,000 of population. The ratio of population to congressmen is of interest to Utah. If nearly a quarter of a million people be necessary to obtain a con gressman, then this state, the prospects are, will fall short of being accredited with an additional representative in the lower house of Congress, as no one has placed Utah's population high enough to be within reach of two congressmen. The census returns are being issued slowly. Today we have the population of Danville, Illinois, Speaker Cannon's home town. There is a remarkable parallel between Danville and Ogden. In 1900 Danville had 16,364, Ogden 16,313. The census thi3 year gives Danville 27,871. Ogden may not fully equal that, yet there will be not much more than a thousand difference in the growth of the two cities. Danville is in the heart of a rich and populous district and has had a great opportnity to draw to itself a part of that population, popula-tion, while Ogden's growth has been limited to a participation in the flow of emigration from the East to the West. The next teri years may see Ogden outclass the city of Fighting Joe. |
