Show TARIFF OUTLOOK Washington, May 9. The tariff bill will continue to divide the attention of the senate during the present week. Ostensibly the amendments to. the different "schedules will be before the senate, but there will doubtless be much general discussion of the whole tariff question. The bill has aroused opposition among Republican senators, which had not been counted upon, and while the finance committee is still confident lhat It will be sustained there Is littles effort by Its members to conceal the fact that they are annoyed over the situation because of tho delay If for no other reason. The general opinion Is that In the end the commute com-mute will nrcvail. but evcrv turn In the pathway of discussion opens up now vistas, so that, apparently, the end Is still afar off. There is again talk of lengthening the hours of the daily sittings, but there Is fear if this course Is resorted to it will have the effect of antagonizing antagoniz-ing to a still greater degree Kie opponents oppo-nents of the measure and of thus creating creat-ing delay rather than, expediting the measure. The great bulk of provisions to which objection has been made are still to be disposed of. The- lead schedule will again be considered when the bill Is taken up tomorrow. In the house tho Philippine tariff bill will be reported tomorrow nnd there will be an effort to consider It Thursday. Thurs-day. If there should be objection on account of absence of a quorum, a recess re-cess v. Ill bo taken until Fiiday, when the house will proceed with the discussion discus-sion of the bill. There Is little or no opposition to the measure. Owing to roe shape which the debate in the senate has assumed, most of the prophets are extending considerably the day for final adjournment, and some senators are placing the date as late as the first of August. It probably prob-ably will not, however, be later than July 1. |
