Show FIFTEEN NEW appeal Made to Astronomers to Co-operate in Following Follow-ing Movements. Cambridge, Mas.. Feb. .28. An 5 appeal to astronomers to co-operate In following the movement of -.ho .jiewly i discovered asteroids or minor -pUnetn has been issued by Professor "Edward C. Pickering of the Harvard observatory 8nd Rev. Joel II. Metcalr, I "tho eminent Taunton astronomer. Rev. MetcaJf says: "I now have about fifteen new asteroids as-teroids which hare been discovered trofflclently long to assuro good orbits. It '. was .supposed" these were .being j counted at the naval observatory at Washington.. But a recent letter from the action superintendent shows sach Is cot their intention." Prof." Pickering says: ' 'The discovery, of the asteroid Eros of tho -group whose mean distance dis-tance Is approximately that of Juylter, and of the variation in light of ccrocai asteroids, has given a value to this department, de-partment, 09 astronomical rcaearoh which it did not have previously. For two or' three years much useful worfc was done by. the -naval observatory in following the asteroids found by Mr. .' Motcalf, and it Ib' hoped its abandonment abandon-ment hy the naval observatory is crly temporary. It is eminently fitting that such work should be carried on by the government, as is done in Germany, Ger-many, since it cannot be maintained at private obeervatories. Meanwhile '.some of the asteroids mentioned atove , '.win soon como to opposition. Unless 'Ephemerldes. for them are computed, ' ithey cannot be found, and there Is dan- i ' er that they will be permanently 1 flOBt." - . . , . , |
